Purchased a SR9 from Academy Sports today. The salesperson also sold me some Monarch 9mm ammo for it. The ammo will not fully feed into the gun. I took out the spent casing that was provided with the new gun and it fits into the chamber with no problem.

The ammo I bought is 9mm Makarov and the little bit of research I have done indicates this is different ammo then the 9mm luger ammo which the gun calls for.

Could someone please explain?

You are kidding me, aren't you?

Nice. Give the guy a break.

9mm Makarov is a 9 x 18 cartridge, your SR9 takes 9mm Luger, 9 x 19 cartridge. The salesperson sold you the wrong ammo for the gun. Take it back.

Thanks, I figured that was the problem

I try to be helpful always, this sounded so completely bizzare that I question the post. If somebody actually sold this guy 9mm Marakov for his SR9, he should be more than fired.

You might want to look at my post history in this portion of the forum, ArmedinAz.

No big deal. I'm just glad I did not need the weapon soon. I own two 22 pistols and a 38 special. I am new to 9mm pistols.

OMG, just came back to say Ruger officially calls the proper ammo 9mm Parabellum (9mmx19), in case you have to deal with the same salesperson. Lots of good info on the SR9 here if you look around.

Hey, tell it to OMG not me. I see that kind of S/A answer to innocent questions on the mountain bike forums I visit, but not on RF. The OP might be one of these new gun owners courtesy of BO and his first reply is a put down. Just saying.

edit: OMG isn't a newbie gun owner. Just a guy with a question.

OMG I hope they let you exchange it. This past summer a guy in a gun shop tried to do the same thing to me. I always try to double check what they give me when buying ammunition-especially 9mm because there are so many different 9mm cartridges.

There are so many 9 mm ammo types it's easy to get confused. Either the sales guy is truly incompetent or he just grabbed the wrong box off of the shelf as 9 mm Mak was probably shelved next to 9 mm Para.

To OMG: The 9mm you need goes by several names; 9mm Parabellum, 9 mm Luger and 9 x 19 are among the most common.

They are not the same as 9 mm Makarov or 9 mm Kurtz (aka .380 ACP or 9 x 17) which are also commonly available but not what you want.

Don't be put off by the apparently short answer. I can certainly see why an experienced shooter would be flabbergasted that a gun shop sales person could make such a fundamental mistake.

Do you actually think that "you got to be kidding me" is some kind of big dig?

Not big, but it didn't answer his question. How is a new poster to answer your response?

No doubt you're a swell guy with a funny streak. No worries.

I saw a clerk at Wallyworld sell a guy the wrong ammo one day. Even though the guy never left the counter they almost had to get Sam Walton himself to make the exchange even though it was the clerks fault. They had to get approval about 3 levels up the food chain.

OMG,

Just a FYI the Monarch ammo is labelled 9mm Luger, I don't think it says 9x19 or 9mm Parabellum anywhere on the box. Should work fine, it's almost all I shoot through my SR9 since Academy seems to have ammo in stock most of the time around here. Only rarely find 9mm anywhere else lately.

Thanks. the 2 boxes they sold me said 9mm Makarov and would not fit into the pistol. My wife took it back today but Academy Sports would not return it.

She stopped by a local gun shop and got the correct ammo. :D

OMG, with all due respect, don't send you wife to deal with it. If you go in with the SR9 and the ammo you were sold and and get the clerk and a manager or the owner I bet you get the right ammo. At the very least the unopened box and a discount for a 2nd one. Were it me I'd start out reasonable and see how it went. This was their mistake not yours.

I wouldn't bring the SR9 with me, less you have a concealed permit and keep it that way. I don't know Academy's policy on this (nor can I find it on the net), as my local Academy doesn't carry Makarov ammo to my knowledge, only 9mm Luger or any of the other names it's known by. Fact is, the clerk sold you ammo to a gun you don't own and can't use. Other problem is the guy running the store is probably just a manager, not a sportsman himself or a hunter with very minimal knowledge of pistols and various ammunitions/calibers. Some of the guys working the counter at my store know some stuff about pistols, but the majority of them are better on rifles and shotguns (deer/duck hunters). To an untrained person, they aren't going to know the difference in 9mm X 18mm or 9mm X 19mm. Either that or they simply grabbed the wrong box (an honest mistake), regardless, someone screwed up somehow. That's not your fault, it's the store's, make sure they see that point of view.

If you don't make any headway with the Managers or Customer Service people, go up the food chain. Academy Contact Us page

If you can't get them to take it back (they may not, policy/laws etc....), you may have to find someone local (Hazardous Material fees with shipping ammo) willing to purchase the rounds at a fair price, that or buy you a gun that shoots Makarov!

Hope it works out!

Josh

Was thinking about taking it back in in the box as received with the receipt. In the present feeding frenzy you might get less than satisfactory service. Their fault, make them fix it.

Hope you like the SR9 BTW.
