Doesn't seem to be an airgun subforum here, so I'll post this in Lounge and if the mods think it fits better elsewhere, they can move it.

Bought one of these a couple weeks ago and have been shooting it pretty happily almost every day.

To save some time and typing, here's a review I found online that is a very honest and accurate evaluation that almost exactly mirrors my experience with the gun (hat tip to Pat in Co). Only thing I'd take issue with is that the rear sight is not plastic as they state, it's metal. The front sight is plastic but it's a very tough industrial-grade plastic and barring severe abuse, I don't see any problem with it.

https://hardairmagazine.com/reviews/springfield-armory-m1a-air-rifle-test-review-177-caliber/

So far there's only one shooting review on U2be, though there are also several previews from SHOT Show. Here's the shooting review.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEAPGl3Cc1U

You can read a number of mini-reviews from customers at pyramydair.com. Some have had problems but most users seem to like them—a lot. Very informative to read.

https://www.pyramydair.com/product/springfield-armory-m1a-underlever-pellet-rifle-wood-stock?m=5169#10355

I bought my M1A from Pyramydair. Ordered on Monday and it was delivered on Thursday via FedEx, and I didn't pay extra for FedEx shipping. Mine came with the front sight canted annoyingly to the right, and the (fake, cosmetic) op-rod handle was broken off. I emailed Pyramyd immediately. The front sight would have been grounds to return the thing, but I discovered the next day that it's just secured with a set screw. A 5/64” Allen wrench and a little adjustment and I had it perfectly upright. Pyramyd took nearly a week to get back to me about my complaint, at which time they offered a return authorization, but by that time I'd decided to try a few shots through it to see if it worked, and I found that it shot quite well. Told Pyramyd that I'd accept this one if they'd offer me some sort of discount for the broken op rod. They've offered me $10 store credit, which I thought was a bit cheap considering they won't have to pay for return shipping, or shipping me a new one, or dealing with getting rid of the damaged one at a “scratch and dent” price. I'm planning to buy two more airguns, so I can use the credit, but I'm not 100% happy with the low amount. Neither other gun is in stock anywhere right now. I was planning to buy both from Pyramid but $10 doesn't buy a whole lot of customer loyalty from me, and I'll get either or both from the first place I find them (which will probably be Pyramyd, who seems to be the “big dog” in the airgun world).

The above links will give a good and accurate impression of the rifle, but I'll add the following observations:

1. Rear sight aperture is quite small (National Match spec?). I opened mine up with a rat-tail file to the same GI-spec diameter as on my M1, M1 carbine, and Colt SP1.

2. Trigger feel is very much like that on my rack-grade M1 Garand and Polytech “M-14S.” It's not identical, but it's VERY similar, with about the same amount of movement; might be about a pound lighter than the real ones. Shooting this thing should be good practice for actually pulling the trigger on your real Garand or M1A. In short, I'm pretty pleased with the trigger feel.

3. The foreend is wider/fatter than the real thing by a bit—about half an inch by caliper measurement. I don't consider this a big deal. Overall heft and handling are very much like the real guns, including the sight picture.

4. The safety works backward from an M1/M1A. Forward is safe, back into the triggerguard is fire. This is a minor annoyance unless you want to practice “snap shooting from ready” drills.

5. I don't see any way you could use this rifle for slung-in position practice, due to the underlever cocking deal. You might be able to rig a sling on the side for carrying, but I can't see how you could rig a forward swivel for position shooting, and even if you could, you'd need a second person to cock and load the gun for you between shots. It's fabulous for standing, offhand, and snap-shooting practice, though.

Long story short (unless that bus has left the station): I like this gun. A LOT. Well worth the money spent, especially at the price for ammo today.

Here it is with my Polytech, and with my faithful old Crosman/Mendoza 522 break-barrel squirrelslayer.

I'm on TWO "notify me when it comes in" lists, for the .177 cal.
(both at $200)

I found three places with them "in stock". Amazon has the .22 cal for $230.
Sporty's has the .177 for $300. Pyramid has the .22 in stock for $200

There are complaints about the rifle being packed in cardboard with "for the world
to see" advertising on the outside.

I'm still hesitant to get one of the .22s because of the pellets going for THREE times
the cost of the .177s. - - - But that's me. Save where you can, but I also have a
pistol that runs the .177s.

The factory box is quite "colorful." Pyramid packed that in a "plain brown wrapper" cardboard shipping carton for shipping, no problem.

Should anyone think of signing up for the "notify me" option with Pyramid, be aware
that you will receive one (at least) e-mail PER DAY, as they try to sell you other
stuff.

I just sent a reply telling them that if they want my business to knock off the "stuff",
and only tell me when it is in stock. :x

Sigh.

Yeah, I get at least one a day from them, too. And another from their sister operation, airgundepot.com. No big deal--"White People Problems."

Did NOT receive an E-mail telling me there was one in stock.
Have been checking at least once per day, and what to my wondrous eyes should
appear, but, on their web site, that they had ONE (.177 cal) in stock. If they were
telling the truth, they no longer have that one in stock.

On order, expected delivery Thursday the 27th.
They also neglected to provide the $10 discount, so I asked about that.
Either way, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival. :D
(it was not shown in stock this morning  ) Sigh.

Just got confirmation that the .177 IS on order. 8)

HO-LEE-BLEEPITY-BLOP!
The price of even the .177 pellets is GOING WAY UP!

I just ordered two 500-count tins of .177 pellets for just a tad over $5 per tin.
Those were the LEAST expensive ones I could find! There were several in the
$10 per 500 range!

With the exception of the ones I found, the remainder were up 100%, or more,
in the last six months!

I'll reserve my other comments for the political section. - - - SHEESH!

I found the same .22 pellets that I paid $15 for at a local gun shop last week online for $10. But I'm sure that shipping would have run me at least $5, so there's that. :?

Meanwhile, Walmart had a few more types of pellets this week than they did last week, but not the kind I wanted/needed. They did have some .22 hunting pellets, but these were more expensive and have more penetration than I need for basement paper-punching. If I need to start thinning the local tree rat herd again, I already have a good supply of suitable .22 pellets for that.

Let me tell you a story:

I wasn't even looking for the SA M1A when I bought one. I was actually looking for the Springfield Armory/Air Venturi BB/CO2 semiauto blowback M1 carbine. Pyramyd only had the $300 wood-stocked model in stock (which is almost TWICE what I have in BOTH of my REAL M1 carbines  ), I wanted the $200 plastic-stocked one. They showed an expected delivery date of September. Didn't want to wait that long for something to shoot, PLUS there's no guarantee they'll actually get them in September, AND I suspect that by then, the price will be much higher than the current $200 (prices on just about everything are rising everywhere, every day). So I ordered the M1A.

Then I went looking elsewhere for the SA Carbine. They're out of stock all over, too, but I did fine ONE vendor that had them, so ordered one, and had it about a week later. It's VERY impressive and I'm looking forward to shooting it, which I haven't yet.

There are two other airguns I'm interested in. One of them Pyramyd is expecting around 5/30, the other they were originally saying 6/03 but now say 7/03. I'm gonna try to order the 5/30 one this week, and I'm gonna keep looking around everywhere for the other one. If Pyramyd gets it first, it gets the order.

Pyramid isn't even showing an expected delivery date for the .177 M1A. It could be months before they get them in again, if ever. Frankly, I'm getting a bad feeling about the whole airgun market and am glad I bought what I did when I did. I'll consider myself fortunate if I can get both of the other guns I want this summer at anything like the currently advertised prices.

So: If you really want the SA M1A, you might want to reconsider going ahead and getting it in .22 now. The difference in ammo price isn't THAT big (compared to, say, .22LR vs .30/06, or something), and I suspect the .22 is easier to load than the .177 (though of course I haven't actually done the latter). The .22 might also be quieter, as I've heard that the .177 can develop supersonic velocity with some pellets, which could produce a neighbor-annoying supersonic crack. Also, I know for a fact that a good .22 airgun like this one is capable of killing tree rats cleanly out to about 15 yards; I have no hunting experience with .177 so can't speak to them.

By the time a .177 M1A is available, the price might well be much higher--high enough to offset your slightly cheaper ammo costs. Also, if you wait, I suspect the .22s might sell out too, and also be higher priced when resupplied. If they EVER get resupplied--as I said, I'm getting kind of a bad feeling about this market at this time. (No bad feelings about the gun itself, though--I still love it!)

Just some stuff to think about. I've GOT mine.

Well, . . . I have the .177 on order (confirmation received with this Thursday
delivery) at $200 ($199.99  )

That's why I went looking for the pellets.
Got confirmation on pellets, first week of June (Amazon).

Did find that Midway USA has the M1 Carbine CO2 BB rifle, in stock ($200),
but I have a lead on one of those in 9mm. We'll see if that comes to fruition.
I've heard that the 9mm version is a LOT more pickie when it come to maintenance.

Ooooooor, you could go for the Crossman DPMS SBR, which is a variant of the
military M4 with select fire, semi-auto and full auto. CO2 powered, and shooting
BBs is fun. They run just under $200.

Oh the things we do when gun powder is expensive.

Good for you! Where did you find one? Can hardly wait to see how you like it. Feel free to add your own report to this thread (pics too).

From Pyramyd. I didn't wait for them to tell me, I just kept checking (at least twice
per day), and bingo, they had ONE show up in stock.

If anyone else is thinking about one, set up the page for the caliber you want and
book-mark the page. That way it is two clicks to check. That's how I got mine on
order.

Interesting. They were still OOS on that today when I checked just before posting. I can't imagine they just received one; I wonder if they found one in the warehouse, or had a return, or maybe decided to sell a showroom display/demonstrator? :?

Anyway, I'm glad you found one, and can't wait to hear all about it! BTW, do you have a real M1A/M14?

A decade ago I bought this Beeman Sportsman RS2( with a barrel change it shoots either .177 at 1,000-1200 FPS or .22 at 850 FPS.

Oh well. :)

Received an E-mail that they have shipped the .177 - - WITH tracking numbers. :D

Thursday may actually happen. 8)

As of noon Tuesday it has made it out of Ohio and into MO, per FedEx.
As of Wednesday (in the oh yawn) it is in New Mexico.
Am I anxious? You betcha batman!

Thursday DID happen.

FedEx is a tad disappointing in that it took 24 hours to get from the hub in Phoenix
to my front door, but they said Thursday, and it arrived just before 2pm Thursday.

Now off to do all the things I need to get done today. I was not about to leave a new
rifle (even if it IS a pellet rifle) out on my front porch while I was running errands.
Off I go!

Well? What do you think?
First impressions:
~ Not as heavy as I would have thought - - NOT light, but not bad at all.
~ Rear sight aperture DOES need enlargement.
~ Safety lever IS the reverse of the M1, M1 Carbine, M14 and M1A.
- - - I'll just have to remember.
~ Trigger is quite nice.
~ Shooting inside (it's been right at 100 outside), it is a bit louder than anticipated.
~ Feeding pellets is no worse than my RWS side-cock.
~ That bullet trap sure rings! - - I'll bet that means it delivers near full velocity.

Pellets:
~ Got 2K of them from Amazon. By the time they arrived, the selling price had gone
UP by almost a dollar (I paid $5.66) PER TIN of 500! - - THEN, looking today, there
is an option to get them for almost twice what I paid! - - - Can you say
totally STUPID prices?!
~ Amazon has 500 round tins in .22 for almost TWICE what I paid for the .177s. .
~ Note on pellets: ALL are hollow point. The .177s are 7.9 Gr
and the .22s are 14.3 Gr.

REALLY hard decision here . . . . but I firmly believe this will be a
FUN gun to shoot!

8)

DAMN! NOW I'll have to set up a back-yard range. At just about a penny per
trigger pull (not counting initial gun cost), this will keep me busy.

Note to self: Check with SIL to see if he has any plate steel. Use that as backstop
for shooting on his patio (remember to turn on the mist-er for five minutes, first). :D
It's hell living in the AZ oven.

M1 carbine has a completely different safety operation. Early ones had a push-button like many civilian rifles/shotguns; later this was replaced with a flip-lever that rotates back and up.

The airgun M1A safety is also only about half the size of ones on the M1 and M14.

Personally, I'm just leaving mine in the OFF position. I always shoot the rifle within a few seconds of loading it anyway.

As far as loading it goes, I've been experimenting with various L-shaped devices to get the pellet into place. Right now I'm using a common Q-tip, bent, jammed into the back of the Crosman pellets. With the Daisy pellets, a large paper clip with one short prong bent out and sharpened to a point was working for me. (This didn't work with the Crosmans, which seem to be much harder.)

Glad to hear you're liking it. Have fun and shoot safe!

You are correct. I went and looked it up and . . bingo, you have it.
I'll go back to verifying things like that.
