FYI:

Recently observed a SP-101 (KSP-831) with the short cylinder frame & it's s/n (570-08354) makes it the earliest known for this variation.

weaselmeatgravy,

RENE says "KSP-821 and SP-831 with short cylinder frame and black panel inserts. Known early s/n 570-10565".

The one I observed is s/n 570-08354. So, I'm just reporting an earlier s/n than what RENE states. I'm surely no expert on the SP-101's & maybe Terry T needs to chime in on this.

Ah, black inserts. That part was missing from the OP. Now I get it :)

That paragraph in the Variations section of the RENE guide is a little confusing when you read it along with the first paragraph which also talks about black insert, short frame guns. The early SN's in .38 up to about 570-00500 were made late and have black inserts. But the earliest guns made (also short frame .38's) had green inserts (and some even had wood inserts like the demo gun reviewed by Shooting Times).

So this is a new known low of the regular production guns to have black inserts. There is still a pretty wide gap of SN's between the highest known green insert gun (570-04731) and this black insert gun.
