50 years - long time hunter and reloader - all my rifles were put away many years ago. Family and self-employed business obligations. An invitation to hunt in OH this year rekindled the spark. Hallelujah!

Yesterday - picked up a new BH Bisely - 45 Colt. Millet Zoom Dot. Ordered 100 - Cast Performance 300gr LFPGC and Starline brass from Midway. Have not chosen powder or load because I can't find a resource.

Any reload data help would be greatly appreciated with this particular bullet - currently hoping to put something together in the 1,100+ fps range.

Thanks in advance. Much obliged.

Inside my boxes of Cast Performance if says a starting load of 21.0gr of Win 296 (Hodgdons H-110) do not reduce that starting load, or 18.0gr of 2400. Do they not include this information anymore? Haven't had to buy any since they sold out and were moved from Wyoming.

I bought the same bullets before I went to Alaska this summer. Couldn't find any actual "listings" though a lot of folks wanted to be helpful. So I called Cast Performance and talked to a guy named "Mike" who seemed to know what was going on. I told him I had a Blackhawk and needed a Ruger only load. The only powder I have for full loads is WW296. He told me to start at 20g. up to a max of 23g I tested it in 0.5g increments and settled on 22g for myself.

Thank you both for the information. Much appreciated. If you find any more - pls let me know.

I have an email into Mike asking him for reloading data - hope to hear Monday.

Have not rc'd my bullets or cases from Midway so I can't say whether or not the data is on the box lid. (?)

Is that avatar from the movie with Charles Bronson? Great flick. As was "Valdez Is Coming" with Burt Lancaster. Miss those old shows.

Thanks again.

My avatar is Lee Marvin from Cat Ballou. BTW, when I researched this CP bullet, I found that when the original operation was sold, they stopped putting load data in the packages. Just what I heard. I should have asked him what loads to use with it for my .454 Casull SRH......but forgot.

Thank you Colt Man. I'll have to load up some .454 loads, factory stuff is WAY to $$!

(All the .454 I've loaded so far is light loads with 250g RNFP and Trail Boss, I've had factory stuff (300g XTPs and some 360g Buffalo Bore )to shoot for the big bangs)

I use the same bullet in front of 21.5gr of H110. I shoot it out of 4" Redhawk, but have not had the opportunity to chrono it. I figure if it's a little over 1,000 fps, I'm happy. All I know is that it hits hard and fast and where I point it. :D

Colt Man & Slim,...........

Thanks for the feedback.

Mike at Cast Performance agreed on the 110 and 296 loads - & suggested I also look at IMR 4227 which - supposedly - isn't as outside temperature sensitive. Extremely nice person to talk to and VERY helpful by the way.

Still waiting on my 300 gr CP bullets and cases.

Thanks again.

Leading up to a question.................

NOT putting down the need for more power on bigger/tougher animals - where it's likely justified - but can't honestly say I really want to shoot a handgun where the recoil pushes the gun up over my head.

I'm walking into this slowly and very much enjoying the process with my new BH Bisely. Here's the question: at what point does it justify the NEED for a 5 cylinder 45 Colt. Again, NOT saying there isn't any justification - just looking for when and why.

Thanks.

I was talking to a friend who had a Bowen 5-shot Nimrod .45 Colt. I bought it. So the answer is...you need it when you find one you fall in love with... It was an excellent decision.

Amen to that Sonnytoo.

Not all good reasons have to be practical. I have a few guns in my safe that I may never use again. None are for sale.

And I suppose - anything the 6 shot will do - the 5 shot would do a bit better.

Have a great week-end.

Hey Flatgate,
I finally got to read the Ross Seyfried Article you posted the link to. I had printed it out as soon as I noticed your post, but work kept me from it. Loved it!!

The .45 and WW296 are made for each other! I never figured out what Elmer thought was so great about his little 0.429 magnum.

Yup, lots of fascinating info out there.

I've had the pleasure of attending several of John Linebaugh's Seminars. Who's who of the big bore handgunning world are there. I was very humbled when John asked that I bring some examples of the "raw material" used to make his conversions. (I set up a little display of both NM and OM Blackhawks, Super's and Single-Sixes.) Several other "vendors" were present, including bullet makers, base pin makers, a couple of gunsmiths and gunmakers, several prominent gunwriters, etc.

Of course, a ton of dedicated big bore shooters were there!

It's a worthwhile experience, IMHO.
