So, now we've got.................

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Words is funny thangs. Dad said since a starlet is a lil star and caplet is a lil cap, and piglet is a lil pig, then a bullet is a lil bull, a cutlet is a lil cut, just like chicklets is lil chicks, and ballet is a lil ball, so gauntlet is a lil gaunt, "and et cetera"

FWIW....I had to complete hand writing analysis courses which also included text. One of the takeaways is that some folks will have a tendency to write/text how they physically feel. IE: Folks in pain, short of breath, anxious, cautious or thinking too much on what they are writing/texting tend to use commas or even periods as they pause to think, catch breath, calm down, etc.....has nothing to do with how intellectual they are or how well versed in vocabulary/grammar they are. The mind is a powerful influence under different conditions.
I was with you until the "has nothing to do with how intellectual they are or how well versed in vocabulary/grammar they are" part.

What we have here is a topic started by someone that rarely comments in topics he doesn't start, his topics he starts are generally about what he doesn't like about others (and knows he's correct), and he makes the same mistakes for which he calls out others.
EDC and PPP can mean different things to different people. Perfectly applicable terms. But anytime I see or hear Boolits or Boolots I just think of an inbred cretin.
Thank you. Stop calling them "boolits" even if the training was to avoid words that define you. EDC? Yes. PPP? Never heard of it until this topic.
You know that technically you can, by using things like commas, parenthesis and other punctuation, write a sentence that can run for pages and be grammatically correct. I had an English teacher in high school that had one posted on her wall. It had been written by one of her students a decade or so before. It was totally correct but by the end of the thing you had no idea what the original idea was, or if there even was one.
I agree. I do it all the time here and elsewhere. To do so, one must know the rules of English grammar yet also understand the nuance of inflection, syntax, and the audience to which one is speaking (or writing).

I have to admit limiting be verbs and avoiding ending a sentence with a preposition. I am a seasoned but not yet old "automotive technician".

If I can use the English language properly, so you all. But many do not. And the many do not because they care not. It is made obvious by the replies.

Well, I guess I should look each post as if I'm looking for evidence, cause or guilt in an investigation....you know how exhaustive that is? It will take me an hour to read a post while taking notes on it ....word choice, sentence, punctuation, sequence, upper case, lower case, emphasis, etc...... :ROFLMAO:

But I understand completely where you are coming from

Agree. I don't read all the posts sometimes and when I don't, it bites me more than is doesn't.

Somehow I can conjugate a sentence, use the proper version of sale/sell, to/two/too, lose/loose, there/they're/their, and the other common gaffs despite having no degree as a car fixer.

Doesn't mean I am smarter. It means I am on a desktop computer for this forum that has a keyboard and a giant monitor I can see. It means I read my posts before I post them. It means that I edit my posts if I miss something because I read them again after they post. It means if I get called out, I look at the why, especially when the topic is over dumb words and the OP misspells words and uses poor grammar frequently whilst pointing a finger at others for what is not incorrect, just not what he thinks follows a false set of life rules.

Better edit post #64.....;)

All good.....typing on a keyboard I often get ahead of myself and skip words......the red line thingy for spell check saves me often......If I were graded on my posts I'd probably have a lot of red circles and few check marks.......I don't lose sleep over it.

Acronyms have been a part of all language for centuries. The military has a LOT of them. Texting has put a lot more into the mainstream use. And I admit to not knowing many of those myself.
But it used to be that when people would write something,, and used an acronym,, they would either spell out the meaning first,, then use the acronym after that. And sometimes put the acronym right after the full wording such as; "Perfect Packing Pistol, (PPP). Nowadays,, I see a lot of acronyms w/o any explanation of what it means.

Absolutely! Unfortunately far too many people use acronyms for terms many people could never know.

Post 27 has many extraneous commas while extolling the necessity of good spelling and grammar. Funny how that works.
Back in the day, comma usage was taught differently than current times. Back then, commas were inserted whenever a speaker would have paused - often for emphasis or dramatic effect.

Currently, comma usage is taught under a "less is more" rule.

I've been taught each way. Today, only extraneous commas (ones that disrupt rather than enhance reading comprehension) bug me.

Bob's usage didn't bother me at all. I understand the rules-of-the-road from his primary school days.

If you have adjusted points with a matchbook you are old.

I routinely have to Google them.

Much depends on context. If I was reading "PC Magazine" (is that still around), I would not expect to see an explanation of RAM, ROM, USB, LAN, WAN, UTP, bps, or CPU.

RADAR, SCUBA, SONAR, HALO, ?

When other folks use a string of letters that don't make sense at the moment, I just use Google to look them up.

Bob is probably in his 90's his EDC for probably the last 60 years has been a Blackhawk. He's still educating young people about what's important. He's not nearly as bad as an Angry Old Nun with a ruler!!!

Although this is true, there are no pauses in spoken form for half the commas in the post I mentioned.

I found the extra word I had. I must have picked an extra "you" up that someone else is missing. :ROFLMAO:
