I have been gone so long...the last time I was on the forum was in 2017. Life has a way of changing priorities. For the last 4 years I have been a caregiver to my very senior (I'm senior myself) parents. My father passed over a year ago, and my mother passed 2 months ago. I finally have my retired leisure time back. I have been shooting very infrequently in those 4 years, but am trying to make up for it now. We have built a railroad tie wall for my gun range and I am having so much fun with targets and plinking. The shots are close, not too bad for lack of practice, but... I need to get serious and actually site in my gun.
Is there a standard distance from the target to do this?

Welcome back....
You did good; now's your time to kick-back and take care of yourself IMHO :))
As far as target distance, I agree to 25 yds for handguns and 100 yds for rifles.
If you are a tactical/camo/green beret type, they shoot 7 yds (although, I cannot understand why so close unless they are old like us and can't see :)))))
