It's that time of year.... I got the bike out and rode about 130 miles yesterday. Coming up on May 6th is the Slimey Crud Motorcycle Gang Cafe Racer Run.... more commonly called "The Crud Run". Typically attended by folks from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, but there are a few others who come from far away.

If you're a rider in the upper Midwest, it's definitely worth it. In addition to a couple thousand new bikes, you'll see a lot of 50s and 60s classics, some antiques, and an assortment of seldom seen brands. Among the brands I've seen: Ariel, Vincent, Sunbeam, Velocette, Moto Morini, and MV Augusta.

A quick explanation of the Crud Run and how it started:

wwb thanks for the heads up i may attend i would like to see the old classics

Must be something wrong with every loud motorcycle around here, they have to constantly rev at the stoplights all the time to keep from stalling...

We have our own fearsome gang from northeast Wisconsin..... Old Coots on Scoots. Grey hair, and in some cases, no hair.

A bunch of ex-amateur racers on sport-touring bikes who terrify the locals and humiliate the kids on sportbikes. A couple of Kawasaki Concours 14s, a couple Yamaha FJRs, a BMW K1300, a Triumph Trophy, and the two oddballs.... a Kawasaki ZX14R, and a Suzuki GSXR - but they're the two youngest of the group, and haven't yet discovered you can go fast AND be comfortable.

Thats because they set the idle real low so it wont even go "potato potato" any more.
They want it to go "chita plutt, chitta plut...chitta...plutt plutt...chitta plut..."
With a car, its"gotta cam, gotta cam cam..."

I think it has been discontinued now, but for many years in Kansas City we had the "Ralph Wayne Vintage Backyard Nationals"
A huge block party full of all kinds of vintage bikes. Everything from ol Hendersons, and Popes, Sunbeams to Brough Superiors to Egli & Norlin version Vincents and track setup Triumphs, Ducatis, BSA, Nortons, you name it. One year I was there with fellow Buell riders, we had quite a cool looking pack of 20 Buells. An old guy pulled up on what at first looked like a 1950's Harley DuoGlide. But the engine was an inline 6cyl custom built from two 4 cyl inline Indians. Old TWA machinist built it. He had it parked next to a one off Confederate, two amazing looking pieces of construction side by side.
My most treasured T shirts in my collection of biker wear are my Ralph Wayne Vintage Backyard Nationals shirts

I put a new battery in my Piaggio Typhoon this week and got out on the road. The powerful buzzing of that 124cc motor is thrilling. Nothing like riding a Spanish-manufactured Italian precision 2-wheeler!
