For the people that plant your backs against the car, I have seen the videos where the gangs teach the kids how to approach the other side, open a door quietly, and grab whatever they can. Since they're short, approaches are hard to see and to stop. If they get caught, no punishment. Lots of purses get lost this way.
I don't know about your car but in my van, the doors lock as soon as I reach 20 mph. If I get out at a gas station, only my drivers door is unlocked. No matter where I am, I have taken to locking my doors the minute I'm in the van. Good thing to do especially in a big parking lot.

This is such a good point. I tend to live in flip flops in warmer months but always think about how impractical they are.

Many years ago I used to help a lady put on a dance on Saturday nights. It was for people in recovery & any money collected went to the clubhouse where meetings were held. Most of the people there were sincerely trying to better themselves & find a better life but wanted to have a little fun. Some were there for other reasons. You could always tell when Ann (the lady that ran the dance) thought trouble was coming. She wouldn't say a word but she would slide her feet out of her sandals. Getting ready to fight. Fortunately we had enough people around that were looking out it didn't come to that but things go on edge a few times & a few times folks were taken outside & persuaded to either behave or leave.

When I taught CCW class in AZ, I taught they should always be in condition YELLOW, just being aware of your surroundings. And to dress for FLIGHT OR FIGHT, wear shoes to run o fight in. Shoes can be a force amplifier when kicking or stomping. Flip flops or sandals don't hack it. And this not just for defense against a two legged predator, but for car accidents, fires, shootings, etc., at malls or movie theaters, etc.
I always lock my doors when refueling, & my head on a swivel taught in different self defense training classes. With few exceptions, the norm here in FL is to wear shorts. I don't wear shorts ever on commercial planes.
Lets be careful out there.

Maybe I live in a unusually safe environment. Most of the time I go to Costco to fill up any of my cars, where gas is typically $0.40 a gallon less than other gas stations. Its always busy with multiple people filling up, and several employees in the area. I've never seen nor heard of any issues involving crime. I have to admit that I am not super vigilant when getting gas there, but I try to be when getting gas in other places. I'm probably most at risk when filling the tank of my motorcycle since I have to keep the flow of gas to a trickle to get the tank to fill, and have to watch carefully to avoid spilling gas all over the bike and the ground. I'm not sure how I could fill up this way and still practice meaningful situational awareness, but this thread has made me think about it.

I developed habits long ago that I never sit with my back to a door. Something a helicopter pilot told me long ago also stuck with me through the years; ever moving eyes on an ever rotating head.

Sandals=Keens Not good for stomping feet or kicking shins but very sturdy and good foot support.

Tom Givens says 40% of robberies occur getting into or out of a vehicle. He may be counting gas station robberies in this count-at least I would. Check out the Active Self Protection YT channel for real world situations.

Another reason to get my wife to fill up the car. "Honey you do the gas pumping and I will keep a watch for any BGs". Last words before being hauled off by EMS, forget the BGs :)

the first clue was the guys wearing hoodies & the victim wearing shorts. Must have been a warm day. If I see anyone wearing a hoodie on a hot day in west Texas- I see red flags everywhere. Ive had guys come up and ask for change , and I tell them : No tengo dinero", and that usually solves the problem........however, 'ROSCOE" is with me at all times.

My son is police officer in Las Vegas. When he was working swing shift and needed fuel on the way home he would drive thru the station first to see who was lerking around the station and if clear he would stop. When pumping fuel he would have his gun buy his leg. He told me there were times a vehicle with several occupants would drive thru slowly looking him over and he made sure they sawthe gun. None of them stopped.
Too bad non-leo cant do the same! Things would be better.

When flying I'd travel with a very compact smoke hood. Gives you 20 minutes of vision and breathing.

Not living in a free American state at this time but soon will be. haven't seen this on the news that I can recall. I was wondering, does it ever happen that someone carrying open has a scumbag come up behind them and baseball bat or shoot them in the head to get the weapon? With todays criminals it doesn't seem like such a crazy notion.
