First off I have to say I'm not a gunsmith.. however I like to think I'm
pretty handy and can usually figure out a problem when it presents
itself... however

I have a SSM-5 that I finally took apart to inspect and improve
the action. This one, bought used, had the bottom grip frame screws
setting flush to proud of the grip frame and when taken apart I found
the holes in the reciever were not tapped clean/deep enough. So I cleaned
up the holes with a tap. Also noticed a lot of flash on the inside of the
receiver .. hammer pivot hole was real bad .. cleaned that all up too.

Now I get it back together and find the hammer pivot will push all the way
out .. its not getting captured by the long grip frame screw. Take it down
again and find that the grip frame reciever hole misses the hammer pivot
hole ..?? The grip hole appears to be at a 90° angle to the base of the
receiver and the hammer pivot hole appears to be 90° to side face of
the receiver.

Anybody ever see this ? Any thoughts ?

FrontSite, Three questions for you. Are you putting the pivot lock screw in the "right" side of the bottom of the grip frame with the gun pointing in the "forward" position? And secondly, did you re-tap the screw holes exactly "square" to the grip frame? Thirdly, are you putting the hammer pin back in the receiver with the lock "divot" to the "right also? If yes to all "three" questions, then you shouldn't have any problem with the gun going back together OK!...............................Dick

Pinecone...

Yes
Yes
Yes

The gun goes back together fine .. but the bottome right grip screw does
not capture the hammer pivot as it should. I checked the depth of the
screw and that is not the issue.. it misses the hammer pivot hole...

by "hole" you mean the slotted end of the hammer pivot pin itself??? That slot is "supposed" to be engaged by the longer screw..........enough to NOT allow the pin to push through...would NOT take much of an "offset" to entirely "miss" this alignment..........fatter screw maybe???with no step on the end ( threads removed)

Dan... Yes the long grip screw misses the slotted end of the hammer pivot
.. completely ! Thats a good idea ..fatter screw without the stepped down
end.. I'll see if I can find a 4-40 that size. Fortunately the hammer pivot
has a tight fit in the receiver and stays in place by itself ... but I don't want
to leave it like that.

I did clean out the hole with the tap but just the bottom end .. I don't think
I could have altered the angle that much without buggering up the threads
all the way through.

Have you ever seen this issue before ?

I have to ask because I am in the learning curve of this same gun
I am thinking correct that It One time Did in fact touch the Pin or notch in the pin
If so and you are fully screwing it in then there is no way it would not
be in the correct position
Try a wire and measure the depth then check the screw Length it should be the answer
Also agree to a longer if necessary ,but where do you find 4-40's as I'm new to these Rugers and I had to order it from them by giving my Serial
Numbers ,I have a Seville and I need the same screw without the pin and would like to buy a few
thanks

Guys, A few points to ponder. First off, the grip frame screws are 6-40 threads and not 4-40 threads. If after careful measurement of the "stud" end, it still will not reach fully into the "pivot" joint of the hammer pin, you can "slightly" countersink the screw head space to let the screw go a little deeper into the pivot slot. This correction often times does not take "much" of a countersink to correct the problem your having. It allows you to use the standard factory screw rather than going to a larger "custom" made screw. The total length of this "factory" screw (head, threads & stud) should be 15/16 inch. Also when retapping or "chasing" threads consider this. Often times the holes are tapped at the factory with taps that are used on hundreds of holes so the cutting "edges" become worn and dull and do not cut as deep a thread. The screws often fit nice and tight in these holes. Once you "chase" the threads with your seldom used "sharp" tap, the threads are now cut deeper and you often times wind up with looser or even "wobbly" screws that can "cant" rather than go straight in the holes. Just a few things to consider when solving these problems!..............................Dick

Yes .. 6-40 not 4-40 .. my bad

and again .. length is not the issue it just misses the slot on the pivot.
No wobble in the screw .. nice fit in the newly tapped hole.

After looking at it again I think I will get a same length screw .940" or
15/16" with threads all the way to the end and I think that will work.
I can see the end of the screw just missing the pivot hole.

Thanks, FrontSite

I'm baffled by this. I swear that many of my "older" New Models will allow me to swap the hammer pivot pin end for end and swap sides with the long screw.............. The pivot pin may not be perfectly centered but it works.

I am still somewhat confused. The Factory "long screw" misses the pivot pin? Off angle or just not seated deeply enough? If it's off angle I'd certainly look at swapping the pivot pin end for end....

Flatgate ... Now thats one I had not thought of .. flipping it over to
try the long screw on the left side.. Thinking to hard ..
I'll give that a shot in the morning.

Yes the long screw misses the capture slot in the hammer pivot..
screw depth is not an issue... but the angle is off.

I tried to get a picture of this but my camera is not up to the task.

Thanks .. FrontSite

Yep what flatgate said. Pin and screw will work either way.
I never can remember which way I take them out  I do make sure that they go back with the long screw and notch in pin correct.

What flatgate said is true for sure. You can put the pin in "either" way. The one "quirk" that I have found in working on many of these revolvers is that the "thickness" of the receiver is "not" always the same on some of these guns and the pin seems to work better (more flush) one way than the other! Sorry I didn't mention this earlier until flategate "jogged" my memory. Thanks flatgate!........................Dick

Thanks all... That did it.. long screw is on the left side now and captures
the slot fine.. and the action is like butter .. which was the original
project...
