During the late 'Fifties and later years, there was a family of local toughs in Memphis who were involved in some very rough times. Some have died in prison, one the victim of a beating.

There is a story of one of the younger ones, aged 68, who was sentneced to ten years in Parchman Prison in Mississippi.

At this sentencing, he told the judge he likely wouldn't live long enough to serve his time.

"That's all right," repsonded the judge, "just do what you can."

True story, from a book Last One Standing.

Whew! I thought this thread was going to be about the guy who got caught in a "compromising" situation with a girl. The father said "marry my daughter or I'll see you get 20 years in prison". Update to the present ... the guy is crying. Says: "If I had taken the prison sentence, I'd become a free man today".

You guys know the story.
