So I've been watching this for about a month, it's been relisted a few times. The seller had a couple others that sold quick. I'm thinking people are wary of what appears to be either oil or glue stains on the finish. I haven't had good luck messaging the seller and was just curious if anyone here could shed light on what that might be and if it would clean up ok. Doesn't seem like a bad price considering.

That looks to be a nice Security Six. Maybe not a great price, but a fair price.
Even shooter grade stainless revolvers can be cleaned up to near new condition with little effort.

If I was thinking of buying that revolver, that little blemish/oil stain/glue stain, whatever, would be of little concern to me. You could also ask the seller directly for a description or explanation of that mark.

Nice pre-warning Security-Six IMO, and should definitely clean up just fine. That price is about what I paid for this 1975 example earlier this year...I added the Sile grips shortly afterwards.

I suspect it'll clean up just fine but it's a $700 gamble.
Can't tell if it's the HB version …. Wish he woulda shown the end label.

I agree with Wayno. I wouldn't worry about that staining a bit and believe it could be removed with a little TLC and a scotch brite pad. Then again not knowing what substance is causing the staining I can't be sure how it would clean up.. I've cleaned up a Service Six NYCPD gun that needed more work than that gun. I used 1600 grit wet/dry sandpaper followed by Renaissance Wax & it looks great. However, you might find one in better condition for that price if you aren't comfortable doing the finish work yourself. One cool thing about that early Security Six is it doesn't have the "billboard" about reading the manual on the barrel.

I messaged the seller again, waiting to hear back. I tried a few weeks ago and they never responded. Definitely the configuration I'm looking for. No billboard, stainless, with factory grips. Less than an hour to go on the auction, I suspect it'll be relisted.

Yes it's the later high back model grip frame. Low backs generally only in the 150-xxxxx serial number range.
Yes, they made a FEW like this with low back frame.

Myself, I'm not so much a "collector" as much as a /shooter/handloader/general firearms enthusiast.

And, I wanted a shooter grade gun...To actually shoot, use & enjoy...Which believe me, I have most definitely done! 😉👍

So, I contacted our own member @weaselmeatgravy, who I've dealt with several times before (even before I joined this forum.) And, he came through with just exactly what I had requested.

That's simply the best advice I can possibly give on the subject at hand.

"Doesn't seem like a bad price considering."

.

I don't think the "stain" is an issue and will clean up. I too considered bidding on this one but already have two of the same. It is not the heavy barrel version BTW, and as stated by another - it is a fair price.

These are great shooters . . . .

Pre-warning, box & papers, somewhat collectible smaller serial number digits (wrong roll die used on a big batch in the 154 prefix), and a little Hoppe's should take care of that dried oil.

I just looked and I have 11 in that small die SN range, 4 of them are 4" stainless. I have a 98% non-boxed one valued at $525. Then I have a 99% boxed w/shipper "S" marked factory Second that is valued considerably higher. Finally a NIB w/shippers consecutive pair that are valued at $600 each. But my valuations are out of date, and I should probably now put the unboxed solo gun up around $575 and the consec pair at around $900 each as a pair.

If you got the GB gun for the $600 minimum bid and paid the tax and shipping, you'd be into it for $678 plus whatever your dealer may charge for a transfer. Is it worth it? Well, if I had it, I would take a minute to clean the oil off the gun and peel that scrap of masking tape off the box before taking pics and then list it in the Classifieds for around $735 shipped, with the $35 going for shipping/insurance cost. But truth be told, if I had it, I'd probably keep it and then sell the one that has no box. But further truth be told, if I bought it, I would probably flag it in my dealer spreadsheet to do that swap and then forget to do it, so it would just sit there taking up dealer safe space and my wife would yell at me for needing to buy yet another safe that we'll eventually have to move when we finally do find our place. So, it's probably best that you buy it and spare me that aggravation.

It is a tapered barrel, you can see the taper if you enlarge the first picture. The seller is in WA and prices for these revolvers are higher in the PNW and CA. Middle US and south it would probably go for under $500 but it does have the original box (so the seller says) and the box is the correct coloring but is it marked to match the s/n? To some, "original box" just means that it is the correct color for that s/n.

And as others have said, Ruger did make stainless low back Six series revolvers but they are very scarce, especially the 6" model.

I have a Security Six stainless with the four inch barrel---the pictured gun is not the heavier barrel version, but don't let that stop you---this is a great revolver and one of the very best Ruger's---I prefer the Security Six over the newer GP100. Mine wears a set of Ruger badged square frame rubber grips and is completely standard---had it for a few decades... I would buy it if I didn't already have one...!

Maybe to help push you over the edge?

I regularly shot beer cans at 70+ yards with my hand loads and my first aerial shots at beer cans was with a Security Six just like that one. Even though I'm now heavily into S&W's I'd buy a 4" like that in a heartbeat.
