Hi. I'm new to Rugers and revolvers in general but I was thinking of purchasing one for home defense or as a ccw weapon for when I'm out of NJ.

I have an opportunity to purchase a Security Six (blue) .357 with a 2 3/4 inch barrel. According to the serial number it was manufactured in 1975 and looks to be in excellent condition. It was purchased as an off duty weapon by a family member who was only a LEO for about a year in the late 80's so I know there wasn't a lot of use during that ownership.

I am a SA pistol owner so I'm not that familiar with revolvers so I was wondering if I could get some answers.

  • 1. I searched the internet for a comparable model but couldn't find another 2 3/4 inch but is seems that all the 4 and 6 inch guns I find describe fully adjustable rear sights but this gun seems to have fixed rear sights. Did the 2 3/4 inch have fixed sights?

    2. Can anyone tell me if this would make a good home defense or ccw weapon?

    3. Lastly I could get this for about $200.00. Does this seem like a good price for a 33 year old gun?

I cleaned it and fired it at the range with .38 special wad cutters and it seemed to shoot great so I would really be interested in what you all think.

Please don't be shy; all opinions would really be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Sounds like a great deal, actual value would be more like $350-400 without the box/papers, more with the box.

The fixed and adjustable sight square butt guns were both originally called the Security-Six model. Then by about serial number 150-944xx, the fixed sight model was renamed Police Service-Six. This actually happened prior to 1975 (mid 1974).

I keep almost the same gun by my bedside, mine is a stainless Speed-Six (round butt) but also fixed sights and 2-3/4" barrel.

Sounds like a good price and a great Ruger. I'm the proud owner of 3 Sixes; a 4" blue Security Six, a 6" blue Security Six, and a stainless 3" Police Service Six. All .357 Magnum. I've had my eyes open for just such a revolver as you describe, in my area. When I find it I'll buy it. That's how good I believe they are.

The number is 150-75873 which means it was produced in 1974 not 1975. That may explain weaselmeatgravy's information about the changes in mid 1974.

The gun says SecuritySix on the barrel so this may be one of the last ones marked that way.

I stopped onto my LGD about 6 months ago. While browsing the handgun case I noticed a speed-six. I asked "How much?. When he said $249 I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. Mine had belonged to a LEO also and had no indication of use other than almost invisible holster wear. It will blow the X out of the 10 ring at 25'. Always within reach at my bedside and loaded with custom made 158gr soft lead bullets. You just can't beat a Speed-Six or Service Six for strength and reliability. Good luck and enjoy.'

'Majsu',
You mentioned that it was a 'family price'. I think you know now how generous family is being to you. Hold that family close to you!
All the more special that it is a family piece.

This is the same model (SDA-32), from the same period - SN 150-75665.

I gave $370 for it in 2005 and thought it was a great deal with the box.

Thanks to all of your enthusiasm, I am now the proud owner of a circa 1974, Ruger Security-Six.

I found a little rust on the trigger, hammer and frame. What's the best way to clean up without damaging the blue finish? WD-40 and 0000 steel wool?

I promised pictures, so here they are:

Tinfoil and light oil - tinfoil is harder than the rust but softer than the bluing.
It's worked for me. Rub lightly, of course.

Can I use aluminum foil? I don't think they sell tin foil anymore.

Hi majsu
Really beautiful looking gun. I have heard that it is better to try to find the copper wool than steel wool. It tends to do less harm to blue finishes if accidently left on the gun despite best efforts. Is that Ser# in the area of the first style grip or the second grip style? I know you will enjoy your new Security Six a lot more frequently than the previous owner appears to have.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by first or second grip style. The serial number is on the bottom of the frame, between the bottom of the grips.

Did they move it during production?

This gun will definitely get more use. It'll be with me at the range tonight, If I remember to pick up ammo.

I believe if the serial # pre-fix is 150 it is the first style. Pre-fix 151 is the later style. I am not sure of the exact differences, but supposedly the grips do not interchange.
