Scout Scope for a Ruger No.1 INT?

I have a Ruger No.1 INT in 270 Win.

Initially I mounted an old Redfield Widefield 2-7 Scope on it (one standard scope ring and one extension scope ring) that I had laying around. I thought I would like the classic looks of a vintage scope on a Mannlicher rifle.

I thought the longer scope would move it back far enough for me to give me enough eye relief. It didn't. The Redfield Widefield has about 3.75'-2.88" of eye relief, depending on the power setting. To keep the scope, I would need it to be set 1" further back. The scope tube already sits back too far for my liking. The back of the rear bell on the scope almost sits directly over the grip/front of the comb. I still have to crane my neck forward.

I want to mount a different scope on it that I don't have to crane my neck forward, and that the rear of the rear bell of the scope will sit over or forward of the safety. I would prefer a compact scope with 1" tube. Perfection would include 2-7x variable power.

I guesstimated the eye relief I would want by mounting my face to the rifle where I would want it, and then measuring the distance from where my eye would be to where I would want the rear of the rear bell to be. I came up with about 6"

Leupold makes the VX-Freedom Scout Rifle Scope in 1.5-4x with 6.9"-6" of eye relief.
Vortex makes the Crossfire II Scout Rifle Scope in 2-7x32 with 9.45" of eye relief.
Burris makes the Scout Rifle Scope in 2-7x32 with 12"-9.2" of eye relief.

The eye relief on the Leupold should be perfect, but the power is a little lower than I would prefer for hunting deer to 250 yards.
The Magnification on the Vortex and Burris is on the mark, but eye relief appears to be too much.

First, I am wondering if the 4x magnification on the Leupold would be good for deer out to 250 yards.
Second, I am wondering how forgiving the eye relief is on the Vortex and Burris, allowing me to use the scope closer than 9". (Eye box?)
Third, I am wondering if there are any other good options for a compact variable power scope for the Ruger No.1 that would work for me.

Any suggestions or answers to the above?

Charlie

Edit to add eye box for how forgiving the Burris and Vortex might be when mounting the rear bell of the scope ~6" from my eye instead of the listed 9"

FWIW, I have a Nikon Omega scope that I like - the specs list eye relief as 5", but I think mine is mounted with something closer to 5.5" or 6" of eye relief. The Omega scopes were marketed as muzzle loader scopes, but they're parallax free at 100 yards like most centerfire rifle scopes; mine is a 3-9 variable, but they also made a 1.65-5 variable (and maybe other models as well). Nikon is apparently no longer making rifle scopes, so you would have to look for a used one if interested...

As always IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc...

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for one. Do you run the Nikon Omega on your Ruger No.1?

Alternatively, I have a Ruger Mini-14 with a Burris timberline 3-9x32 scope on it. That scope advertises 5" of eye relief at 3x and 3.75" at 9x. I could move that scope to the No.1. and buy a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 (non-scout model) for my Mini-14.

I have a Vortex 2-7 'Scout' scope on an AR pistol. They're not kidding about the 9 1/2" eye relief. It's WAAYYY out there. Just guessing this scope would put the eyepiece about even with the loading slot of a #1 or maybe a bit further forward. They do work well enough for use on a hunting tool.

Thats what I feared. I figured with that eye relief it would be a lot to ask from an eye box.

I tried switching my Burris Timberline 3-9x32 scope to my Ruger No.1 last night. Eye relief on the low end is 5". I was able to get a sight picture, fairly comfortably, from 3x to about 6x. The eye box was pretty small at 9x and I had to crane my head forward to get a full sight picture.

I moved the scope back to my Mini-14 and realized that the 9x sight picture is a little hard to acquire on that rifle as well, but doable.

Back to the No.1. My wife helped me measure the distance from the rear of the rear bell to the front of my eye, rested comfortably on my stock. She came up silty values from 9"-10".

I'm leaning more and more towards the Vortex Scout Scope for the No.1

As a side note. I put my 10/22 RSI next to my No.1 RSI. It looks like the scope sits so far forward that if I would want to mount a traditional scope, the rear tube (behind the adjustment knobs) and rear bell together would need to be over7" to get the scope back to where it would be on a regular rifle.
