Ruger Security Six or Taurus M 66 (6" bbls)

Had a 4" Taurus 669 back in the late 80s. Only had it a few months before I sold it and bought a Redhawk 44. It was cheap but for the short time I owned it, it was accurate and I had no issues at all. With that being said I'm sure it would never out last a Ruger or Smith. Never owned or shot a Security Six so I can't comment on it. But I would get the Ruger.

OP, what do the folks over on the Taurus Forum say?
O boy did they Gang Bang me one time for insulting Taurus repair policies.
Seems I had no tolerance and Taurus was working hard to improve and change.
That was at least 5 or 6 years ago ,,,,,,,,, they must still be working on it cuz it still stinks.

Which would you recommend? The Taurus is 1986-1988 with "5" serial # prefix.
Both are minty condition.
Use would be mostly informal range and occasionally hogs.
I realize the Ruger may be better for steady diet of
Definitely the Security Six. I had two Taurus 66 timing issues. The cylinder would unlock just by moving the cylinder back & forth, without touching the trigger or hammer. This was back around 2003 when I worked in a Gun store in AZ.
I just returned an 856UL to them for the same reason. While checking the internet for trouble shooting help, I found several other owners who experienced the same problem. All agreed the timing was out, but for some reason none mentioned what the fix was.
Yeah, the Security Six for sure.

I mentioned in #45 I sent an 856UL in for timing issues. As of today they've had it for 32 days. The site status area kept telling me the S/N could not be found. It was signed for 01/07. The one time I was able to get through to them, I was told the 4 week turnaround begins when the gun is logged in, and at that time 21 days, in still wasn't logged in.
So dissatisfaction is warranted.

Security Six for sure, only had one Taurus after shooting it for six months it was not functioning, sent it back to Taurus they couldn't fix so they sent a new replacement gun ( which was good customer service) but as soon as it came I sold it.

Ruger cust service is great, no doubt about it. But in this case it is moot. Ruger doesn't service six series guns anymore.

This is the reason I bought an SP101 and a GP100.

I initially resisted buying any Six Series revolvers for that reason also. I first bought a "possibly unfired" Speed Six 3" in 38spl from an online forum and liked it so much I bought another 2 3/4" in 357. Then came two Service Six 4" 38spl and a Security Six 2 3/4" 357. I recently bought another 3" Speed Six 357. All but one were online forum and auction purchases and all of them have been trouble free without exception. I bought them with only photos to judge condition. Maybe I've just been lucky or maybe there's a reason there are so many 35-40 yr old Six Series still going strong. They're built like tanks & very durable.

The Security Six is a fine gun. If your question was between the gp100 and the Security Six, people would have probably still recommended the Six.

However between the gp100 and the Rossi ( also owned by Taurus) your results may have been different.

If you're referring to their Beretta 92 variants, Taurus purchased the Beretta factory (and apparently hired the Beretta employees) directly from Beretta. Given that Beretta agreed to & profited from the transaction, I doubt "rip off" is an appropriate description!
:)
Licensed or not, it's lazy. I'd just buy one from Beretta. I suppose it's a slight hot button for me, as Beretta used to be my favorite brand. It irked me that there was another (apparently inferior) brand making almost literally the same pistol, (the 92/96) I also prefer to buy US made when possible, I know, Beretta is an Italian brand, but makes a lot of stuff in the US, including the 96 I have.

Had a Taurus.... was a NIGHTMARE in quality and WORSE in customer service.
p.s. I loved the gun, and it's looks, but it broke (catastrophically) so many times, that I just gave up. They NEVER helped either.

Well, I guess every company that produces 1911s must be "lazy," too, except maybe for Colt - ditto for 99.9% of the companies making ARs, including Colt (Colt purchased rights from ArmaLite, similar to Taurus purchasing rights from Beretta ;^).

I also own Berettas and like them, but IMHO Beretta screwed up when they repositioned the 92 safety up on the slide - Taurus retained the original Beretta frame-mounted safety, which I personally much prefer. Beretta finally corrected that error with one or two of their more recent models, and if I ever see a Beretta with a frame-mounted safety for sale at a reasonable price, I'll probably buy it!

(Or maybe not - I hadn't shot my Ruger P91 with P89 top half in a while, so I took it to the range last week, and it shot better with the 9mm reloads I was testing than a couple of more expensive guns, a Beretta & a 'Glock clone'. Probably should just shoot the Ruger more often!)
:)
