Looks like you have the largest and in my view, a very impressive collection of No. 1s.

I think they're the most elegant guns on the market other than essentially unaffordable Holland & Holland best grade double rifles. If I won a lottery, I'd buy one in .577 Nitro, doubt I'd shoot many full loads, just reduced loads and admire it.

Think the thick barrels combine to make them much more attractive than double shotguns. Enjoy, guys

FYI, had a computer glitch, probably me trying to accomodate my wife's art work and lost my user data so I'm coming in on a different user name. Don

I have a 450/400NE with great wood and an octagon barreled .470 NE. Both are fun to shoot.

I have a 45-70 with the C-weight barrel and it is a blast. I never held one of the Lymans so cannot offer a comparison. The 1S-C must weigh 8 lbs with no scope, and it could still use a better recoil pad. Of course, if I only shot ten rounds at a clip it might not need a better pad. But I never take fewer than 50 rounds out and I do not like carrying them home.

Does it matter what caliber used No. 1 that I use as the starting point for a custom barrelled 45-70? Can I just shop for any used one at a good price, or are there considerations that affect the COST of conversion to a large degree?

Receivers are all the same. A 45-70 International would be neat.

I have two, a .375H&H and .458 Win Mag. With full loads the .375 is no fun it comes back sharp and fast. With a standard scope I was rapidly heading toward a flinch as I was dodging the scope, so I put Leupold 2.5x scout scopes on both, no problem there. The .458 seems milder and although I want to shoot cast bullets with it I have not had much luck. I tried one of the Lyman Postell types and they were keyholing at 25 yards, may have to try a shorter lighter bullet. My wife has had some rather intense orthopedic type surgeries in the last year and a half so have not had any time to play with it.

I have a older # 1 in .460 S&W with a 22" barrel and have dies and bullets for it and when the weather opens up I am looking forward to seeing if I can get a .452 magnum 300gr bullet to 2500-2600 fps, if I can I,ll be happy.

2550fps equals 4331ft lbs, highly unlikely you can do that with a case which has a vastly smaller capacity. Don
