Thinking about picking up a Flattop .45 convertible. Can anyone comment on the accuracy they are seeing with the .45 acp cylinder as compared to the .45 Colt, same, better, worse?

I have two of the flattops, one blued and one SS. Haven't done much accuracy testing with the .45 ACP cylinders, other than they seem to shoot just fine (don't use factory ammo). I had to ream both the .45 Colt and .45 ACP cylinder throats to .452 ... Other than that all is well.

While shooting for a 'fun' contest, I shoot these 5 shot groups standing off hand. Granted it is 'only' 7Y and 10Y. I can't complain about the .45 Colt accuracy.

Here is the .45 Colt FT that I have been using ....

Rclark , That is some mighty fine shootin pard!!

woods-walker , I have three Ruger .45 convertibles. One 5 1/2" BH and two 4 5/8" Vaquaros.
The Vaquaros shoot to the same POI with both .45 Colt and .45ACP when shooting my
CAS loads in the Colt (200-230 gr. cast bullet over 6 gr. Trail Boss) and with the ACP loads(230gr. RCBS .45-230-CA over 6 gr. Red dot.) that load also runs great in my SR 1911. Ruger regulated them well as they all shoot right to the top of the front sight at 15 yd.

Gents,
Thanks for the feedback. I grew up with revolvers and have relied on 1911's as of late. It would be a good thing to have a revolver that could perform with the .45acp round as I think it fills (almost) the same niche as the .44 Special. I have a Old Model Blackhawk .45 Colt that was tuned by Mr. Bowen that is my baseline for the Colt cartridge performance.

I keep thinking about how useful a packing size revolver in .45acp could be for general field work. I have been favoring the 230gr. Gold Dots in my 1911's but handloaded 200 grain Hornady XTP's have a good reputation for this task.

I am thinking that though most of my revolvers are blued carbon Steel, the Stainless Flattop is the way to go for an everyday carry walk around the Homestead sixgun. I have to discuss this with my S&W K22. :)

The 45 cal convertable has been calling me for decades. The stainless finish did it for me.

I don't plan on hot rodding the 45 Colt (or shooting it much) so the smaller frame/cylinder did not play into the decision.

There is a little bit of good reloading data for the New Vaquero if you want to reload for the 45 Colt cylinder.
