Fellow brought me an older Ruger 44 Magnum Carbine that he and a friend had almost taken completely apart to clean. However, they got stumped and stopped. They tried to put it back together and in doing so buggered the threads on the plug screw on the back of the trigger group the holds the disconnector plunger and spring in place. I need to know the proper tap for rethreading them. The treads on the screw measure .2795"x36, best as I can measure with dial calipers. However, I am not sure that I can find a tap that size. I can see why they recommend not disassembling them. Any help appreciated.

That is an interesting set, may have to buy one. I have a Brownell's screw checker, and the plug screw can barley fit thru a 9/32x32 hole. The closet drill size is a J drill that measures .2770". As a last resort I guess I could drill it out to 5/16" and tap it for a plug screw that size. But was wanting to keep it original. Thanks for the suggestion.

Might give Ruger a call and ask them what the spec is.
They most likely won't/ don't have the parts but might have something that would at least tell you. Might even ask if they know of somebody that might know, if they don't know.

I don't know those guns at all, but this also came to mind;

This might help too.

If you need the screw.

Don't know if this helps, but looks like the Ruger part number is /was C81.
Unfortunately, it does not give us the thread pitch........

The problem is not the screw cap. The problem is they buggered the threads in the hole. I have spent two days trying to find a tap, but it is an odd size. I called Ruger and got no help from them. Called 3 tap manufactures, no help. Tried to call Pine Tree Castings that made the trigger housings for Ruger and got Ruger again. I had some old info on a William C. Fisher in Goshen NH. that used to repair 44 carbines, but no phone number. Also, a KD Wilhite that worked on them, and a Mr. Deerstalker that was supposed to be very knowledgeable about them. I can find no contact on either of them. If anyone has contact info on these folks, I would greatly appreciate the info.

It would seem to me that if you can buy a brand new screw using the above link, then most fastener supply stores could use their gauges to tell you what screw size you have and then you can get the appropriate tap -- most of the time. I had the same issue finding a particular set screw for a motorcycle part. Even the biggest fastener supply store in Phoenix tried to match it, and they couldn't. It was somewhere between a metric and US thread. Eventually just had to buy a used part off eBay that included the screw I needed. You may wind up doing the same: buying a used trigger housing in good shape, maybe even a whole carbine that is trashed except for the housing.

Suggest double checking the thread pitch as MSC Ind. Supply has 9/32 - 32 & 9/32 - 40 taps. But considering it's gun threads, the in between wouldn't surprise me.

And, a shade tree trick. Usually buggered threads like this are messed up just at the entrance of the hole. I've used a chamfer cutter to cut away the first couple of threads.
