Well scarce is a good thing for an older gun. Do you know how they came to be? Left over barrel used? A lot as in 10 or so?
Thanks,

I would say during production they needed barrels and put them on. I seen a few more in 98 to 99000 range maybe 5. Also other serial number groups. I have one in the 50000 range.

Thanks for clarifying this. I'll be certain to keep my eyes open for one of these. I'll let you know if I ever come across one.

They are scarce.
Factory error probably... it would have been almost by default that the .44 Carbine barrels get machined for the dovetailed rear sight. Probably pretty easy for an employee cutting that rear sight dovetail to not notice the receiver slot cut for the peep sight, especially since the RS was a tiny fraction of total .44 Carbine production.

Hold on; a flip-up sight mounted to the barrel wasn't the norm for a .44 Carbine? I picked one up (in rough shape) a couple months ago just because I've always wanted one. 1970 manufacture, with the flip-up sight.

barrels with the dovetailed Lyman flip sight were the norm.
