Hell group...frank n texas here with a question?

I have in my safe a unfired Ruger .30 cal carbine revolver I have yet to shoot..

My question? is the .30 cal ammo I buy for this gun the same exact .30 cal ammo one would use in say a M-16 carbine..

Or expressed another way, does the revolver and the rifle use the exact same ammo?

I have a box of Hornady steel match 30 carbine 110 gr FMJ....Will that work

Thanks in advance

Frank,
Yes, it's the same ammo. Being in a revolver, it is a little less CAOL sensitive but I've not seen any of my M1 Carbines be overly sensitive to my reloads they all go bang.

Recoil out of the Blackhawk is on par with a fairly hot 38sp +p out of a similar revolver. They are loud. If you forget your hearing protection, you'll understand the value quickly.

Mine is quite accurate and a lot of fun to shoot.

just have to be careful with 'reloads' if they have a roll crimp, too much roll and you can get headspace issues, ( misfires) with Ruger 'spare' centerfire cylinders , the cartridge headspaces on the mouth of the case.

frank n texas,

One reason ( and I think only reason) that Ruger came out with a Blackhawk in that caliber was the vast quantity of very inexpensive surplus military ammo available at that time. It is a fun gun to shoot, a bit dirty, lots of flame, and as jeffnles1 said ear protection is a must. Most of this comes from the physics of the length of barrels of M1 and the comparatively short 7.5" Blackhawk.

I think the .45ACP extra cylinder was added to the .45 Colt Blackhawk for the same reason.

Don't own a revolver in .30 but have shot one ..... twice ....... your hearing protection needs hearing protection ........ it's a shame they are sweet shooters otherwise!

Do have an M1 and for being "inaccurate" ....... it's pretty accurate!!! Not so loud either!!

I have toyed with going to a Ruger in .30 and the only way I'd use it extensively is to load it down using mid range powders .... my beloved HS-6 comes to mind. Would not likely cycle in my rifle but I'd live with that and keep my ears.

The OP asked if it was the same as the M-16, NOT the M-1. I am sure he meant M-1 but just in case; the M-16 uses different ammo!

You say these guns are sweet shooters, is that while using surplus M1 ammo? I would think handloading with a pistol type powder would drastically improve accuracy while reducing noise & blast...with something like 2400? Maybe these guns are plenty accurate with rifle ammo, and the gains are minimum; what's been your experience?
