Just came across this in the News section of the Ruger website. Watch for more at the Shot Show.

Ruger® Introduces The Ruger 22/45™RP Rimfire Pistol With More Of A 1911 Look and Feel
January 18, 2010
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE-RGR) is pleased to announce the introduction of the new Ruger® 22/45RP Mark III™ pistol, an even more realistic understudy for the venerable 1911 pistol. Now, the classic 1911 grip angle and feel of the Ruger 22/45 pistol is enhanced by replaceable 1911-style grip panels.

The checkered, cocobolo, 1911-style grips are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and allow shooters to swap to other grip panels to suit their shooting taste, style or need.

Like all pistols in the 22/45 lineup, the new Ruger 22/45RP pistol offers virtually identical magazine button, manual safety, and bolt stop locations as the classic 1911 pistol. The slim polymer grip frame features a serrated front strap and a checkered back strap.

The 33 ounce Ruger 22/45RP, chambered in .22 LR, features a blued alloy steel 5.5-inch bull barrel with a fixed front sight and micro-adjustable rear sight. Mounting optics on the new pistol is easy as all adjustable sight Ruger Mark III pistols are drilled and tapped for a Weaver-style scope adapter, included at no extra charge.

Betcha a Ceiner .22 conversion for your 1911 is cheaper..... and it REALLY feels like a 1911.

What's that you say??? You don't have a 1911????

Better get one..... it's kinda like a 10/22 - NOBODY should go through life without one (or several).

For all the 1911 rumors, this may aggrevate some RF members who were looking for the real thing from Ruger. This looks like a 22/45 with slab side grips. We'll see what else they've got up their sleeves at the Shot Show.

Ruger must have seen enough of the guys over at rimfircentral.com taking the Dremel tool to their 22/45 frames and drilling bushing holes to make this very same thing. This is how Ruger should have done it in the first place.

True, but it won't be as accurate as this one.

Kinda cool gun...I think I want one.

And yes, this is how Ruger should have done it in the first place.

It would be great if it had 1911 slide lock and thumb safety.
Too bad Broken Gun ranch went out of business.
I think I will just finally mod one of my MK II 22/45

I think it's clever. Folks have been wishing this would have been the original configuration since the 22/45 came out. A cottage industry in modding the guns to accept 1911 panels has sprung up.

And one wonders if perhaps this wasn't "fallout" from a design study for the rumored Ruger 1911, using the same grip panels??

The Ruger home page indicates a $45 premium on "suggested retail" pricing over the "standard" model. We'll see if it actually goes for that much on the open market.

I'd like to think so, but we'll just have to wait and see.

The ones illustrated look a little narrower than "standard" panels, but I can't be sure.

Screw size/placement would be critical.

Now, to me, that's pretty silly looking. Don't get me wrong it's nice to have grip options on the 22/45 but to put 1911 slabs on it to make it look like something it's not doesn't appeal to me.....not that there's anything worong with that......

Hey looking at that pic again..

10140.jpg

does not appear to have the same shape as (first pic I pulled up on google images):
myan.jpg

What happens here the thumb saftey goes on the left side of the gun? It would look weird with the cut out for the mag release on the right side. Also a large portion of grips have the cut out for the bottom take down pin (the grips I posted do not have this though)

Also the largest thing I notice is the 22/45 grips are rounded in the rear as the standard 1911 grip is straight.

But maybe I am not understanding something correctly??

"...allow for the use of most after-market 1911 grips, with minimal grip modification..."

I expect the sightly rounded bottom rear corner is part of that "minimal".

gotcha, so it adds a large flat section with a ridge into your palm, unless you sand down the ridge and compromise the look of the entire grip :D
