Ruger 10/22 Tactical (1261 model)

Good evening,

I'm looking to purchase my first 10/22 and am considering the tactical model (1261) as I like the idea of the shorter (16") threaded barrel and I don't have a need for the takedown model. I would remove the flash suppressor and add a thread protector. I have a couple questions:

- can you recommend any iron sights for this model as it doesn't come with any?

- is the barrel diameter on this model the same as the standard carbine or thicker?

- would you recommend this model over the standard carbine or takedown?

Welcome to the forum. Hope your PM doesn't make life too difficult for you.

That model is designed to use optical sights and I don't see any provisions for iron sights, especially the front. If you desire iron sights I suggest you opt for a model that includes them.

Having both sights AND threaded muzzle becomes a sticky wicket. It CAN be done but often becomes quite expensive.
The alternative is a common fixed front sight model and one of the 'slip-on muzzle thread adaptors'.

The neat thing about the Ruger 10/22, they are fairly easy to build your own the way you like/want it.
My 1261 was a 50 year model, so I built my own 50 year model "Taticool".
Used a older Boat Paddle Stock, changed the flash hider out to a trimmed down 3 finger, oversized Charging Handle, DNZ one piece scope mount, Bushnell 22 Tatical Scope, sling.
It's a jackrabbit slayer.

As for a front sight there are options out there depending on what direction you go.
This is a front and rear combo that is made in different options, one being a #1261 barrel. Nodak Spud, they have been recenty acquire, might be a supply situation.
Might check w/ Samson for their options.
1261 Barrel is just a standard barrel with ~2" cut off.
I didn't care for the BIG Ruger flash hider on the short barrel, seems to defeat the point of a shorter barrel.

Thanks that's a sweet rifle! Would you happen to have a pic of what the muzzle looks like without anything threaded? I assume a standard Ruger thread protector could be put on.

As long as the threads are 1/2x28, most any thread protector will work. Excuse me for asking but why the obsession with a thread protector? I can understand the desire for threaded muzzle but a thread protector is just a little inconsequential sleeve thingy.
