How often should the magazine be taken apart and cleaned? I have 10 2 I put less then 500 rounds through, last weekend while shooting it the rotating drum within the magazine stuck after only shooting 3 of the 10 rounds in the magazine. The rotating part would not push up the next round to the top of the magazine. Not sure if something got stuck, after I pushed it with my pocket knife it pushed the next round up and continued firing without any issues. I was shooting a lot of Remington thunderbolts, I understand and also noticed are very dirty ammo. Does the magazine need to be taken apart and cleaned frequently?

The magazine realy should only be cleaned when it starts to gum up as yours is doing.. Overcleaning it or takeing it apart every range setion is unnessasary..
I found a video on youtube by pete that shows you exactly how to disassemble, clean & reassemble the Ruger 10/22 magazine..
The only trick is tentioning the rotor & he states it's 8 points or 1 1/3 turns
Good Luck!!

Hi,

I give mine a "surface cleaning" w/ Q-tips and solvent. Doing that, it was 20 years before I had to take my first one apart.

Since my mags are all close to 30 yrs old, they were made before I recall the "improperly assembled" problem started showing up on the forums. Apparently, Ruger's outsourced the magazine assembly, and there were some that got out w/ the springs improperly tensioned. So it might be an idea to take any new one apart and ensure it's properly adjusted IF it doesn't work right from the start.

Then, it should go a long, long time like mine did... ;)
