I recently picked up a ruger magnum marked rssmx . Serial number is 339933 .It has a xr3 red grip frame and eagle barrel. Called ruger today and was told it was shipped in April of 62 . I thought the red frames didnt show up until sometime in June or July. Is this possible? Thanks in advance for all info and comments.

My first impression is that Ruger might have made an error when reporting the ship date.

I've just NOT heard of "early" XR3-RED guns, i.e. shipping dates prior to June of '62.

I'd inspect the gun closely; screws been tampered with?

Very Interesting and I'll sure like to know the "rest of the story"....

Well, might be an early RED. My notes show 33628x being shipped 3/62 with an XR3 grip frame. Yet 336518 was mfg 8/15/62 with an XR3-RED grip frame. Kind of a big gap in production dates there for some reason. Maybe there was a little delay in shipping XR3-RED guns, even though the factory may have had them available that early (maybe had something to do with the announcement of the "new" .357 Blackhawk???) Maybe Ruger started stockpiling grip frames until they knew there would be enough to start churning out new Blackhawks again (as advertised with RED grip frame)...I do know there was a delay from the flattop to the protected sight model.
JD says the grip frame was revised to the "RED" style in April 1962. Not sure if that's an accurate date or pulled out of the air, but I don't see anything else in there that confirms that date (like an invoice, or ????).
Don't know.
I do know that the very earliest XR3-RED grip frames exhibit a very poor anodizing, almost looking like a slate gray in areas. Does your grip frame have this same kind of color? Also...see if it is marked "ALCOA G" on the hollowed out area of the grip frame under the grip.
Lastly, you might try re-confirming with the factory the 4/62 date.

I have two XR3-RED RSSMX in that general SN range, so I just called for ship dates.

335009 - June, 1962
339747 - October, 1962

So no help there with earlier than June XR3-RED ship dates.

The 339747 gun is interesting in that the rollmark was mis-aligned, too far to the right, so the cylinder latch pivot went right through it:

Interesting the 33xxxx guns shipping June - Oct 62 and my RSSMX 352546 shipped in Dec 62. Sounds like they shipped a lot of guns for the Christmas rush.

My RSSMX 339904 has a letter that states it was shipped in September of 1962, as a model RSSMX, .22 magnum, with an extra 22 L.R. cylinder, 6 1/2" barrel, walnut grips. I have the extra cylinder with the serial number engraved and I know the grips are not correct. It came with the Micro sights installed but it didn't letter that way. If it had I know that would have been very rare. Also, if you'll notice you'll see that the anodizing is almost completely gone and is a very light gray in color. The screws appear to have not been removed and has not been converted. I guess it's just a plain, run of the mill 1 of 700. Oh well.

Interesting gun! As you've stated, it needs "period correct" walnuts with black eagle medallions. The lousy finish on the grip frame is "normal" and adds to the authenticity of the piece, IMHO.

MY rssmx grip frame is also very ash gray in color. Is there any information anywhere as to the type of frames that guns would have been shipped with or is it just by asking and comparing serial numbers and seeing whose has what? I inquired with ruger and they said they dont have that information available . Is that for the public or do they just dont know?
