Just picked up a new RPR and noticed quite a few dings and gouges in the bolt. Is this normal or does it seem excessive?

You didn't say if the gun was bought new or used. I think it is unacceptable for a new gun. If new call Ruger and they will exchange it for a perfect one.

New, that's what i was thinking. But i wasn't sure if i was being over critical.

The bolt on my $300 308 American looks a lot better than that. You know the RPR is just a dolled up American, right?

I do not have the same dings in my bolt as yours, (looks like yours was pulled from a pile of bolt assemblies), but I did notice from day one, my bolt looks as if it was hand-fitted with a die-grinder, and rather crudely. It works okay, and I suspect it'll be a non-issue unless I decide to do some final finishing to remove the rather grotesque tool and grinding marks.

Also today, just because of this thread, I looked at another American bolt at the gun store, just to see how the bolt looked. It was finished very nicely.

Leads me to think maybe there are/were bolt issues with some Americans, as Heliman Dave has bolt issues with his American requiring its return to Ruger.

Mine felt slightly chunky and not so smooth, but as i have nothing to really compare it to i'm not able to say if that's normal for this rifle or not.

Either way i did contact Ruger and send them the pictures. They did have me send it back so we will see how it turns out in a few weeks.
