picked up a round-top in 270 last week. beautiful blueing in fantastic shape. the only issue is that someone tried to refinish the stock. runs, fibers, hairs, about the worst job I've ever seen, on ANY piece of wood. they didn't even take the stock off the gun, there's varnish on the barrel, grip cap, recoil pad, action, and even gummed-up the bolt release. it's all apart for refinish, except for the grip cap. I would assume one screw holds it on, but how to get to it. peel out the logo in the middle? didnt want to break anything before I know.

There is no simple way to remove the medallion in the middle of the cap. You WILL damage/destroy it getting it out. Just one of those things.

I drill a small hole off to one side and use a drift pin to pry them out. The cap is held on by one philips headed screw under that.

Last time I bought some from Ruger they cost something like $1.50 or $2 each. I bought a dozen for 77s (white) and a dozen for #1s (gold) and still have some in a pill bottle in the tool/parts cabinet.

Have fun

Picketpin nailed it. That's what I had to do to remove mine. I had almost the same situation. Roundtop with a horrible refinish just like yours varnish everywhere, there was some awful nice wood under there so I had to buy it and rescue it. Mines 30-06 and a liberty model. It's a pretty fair shooter on top of everything else.

All Ruger's made in 1976 were marked "Made in the 200th year of American Liberty". The M77's were marked on the side of the barrel towards the front of the stock.
