Had some pics texted to me, earlier today, from Ronnie Wells, and I will soon have this puppy in hand. He's been working his tail off getting a bunch of orders done. The grips are black Micarta, with palm swells. I hope to ring it out, over a couple of evenings next week. These short barreled large frame Bisleys were a great idea, but they are much too heavy to really fit in the perfect packing pistol category, in my opinion. At least not for hip holster carry. Since I have smallish hands, with short fingers, I went with the Potatoe Judge Junior grip frame. Ronnie says that a lot of guys with MAN hands like the PJ Jr as well, though. Ronnie offers an amazing number of various grip frame options in aluminum and brass, that can accommodate anyone from a hobbit to an NBA center, and that is no exaggeration at all. Ronnie has huge hands, himself, and that's why he started making custom gf's way back in the 80's. I'm glad he turned it into a business! Check out rwgripframes.com

This 3.75" 44 mag Bisley was originally a little over 43oz, and it should now weigh about 37oz. I may try to source a fluted cylinder and file in scallops to the loading gate and recoil shield. That might take out another 1-2oz, or so, and add a little more coolness, if nothing else. An aluminum ERH could help to lighten things another little bit. It takes pennies to make dollars, and several little things can add up to save weight. I will likely try some flame thrower loads, just for fun, but it will mostly be carried with a load consisting of a 260g Keith running about 950fps.

I've personally lost about 40lbs over the last several months, and lightweight kit is nice, as well. My knees are really thanking me. I want to do a lot more hiking, fishing, coyote hunting, etc, before I'm too old. These lightweight single action PPP's sure make nice carry pieces, and they are super flexible in that one can taylor loads from extra mild plinkers, to fire breathing grizzly stompers.

Ronnie is also giving a SS 4 5/8" Taffin PPP 45 Colt a similar treatment for me, but with nice walnut, and a couple of surprise tricks that folks should finds pleasantly surprising. I certainly do! I will post about that separately when it's all done, as it will be a very special piece.

Here is a SS flattop 44 special Bisley Jr. that is in process. A friend is shortening the barrel to 4", and adding a "paleroadster" front sight. The Bisley Jr and PJ jr are almost the same, but the PJ has the rounded extension on the bottom. This gun should weigh about 35oz when all done, which is seven ounces lighter than a 4 5/8" XR3 version in all steel, and 8-9oz lighter than the 4 5/8" all steel bisley version. Much more packable all the way around, IMHO.

Ronnie saw my post, and gave me a call. I know he's really busy trying to get a bunch of work done so I didn't ask him to scallop the recoil shield and loading gate, and I just figured I'd try to do it myself. He noticed that I said, in my post, that was gonna do it in myself, and he just went ahead and offered to do it. Ronnie is a super cool, and a super kind man. He really goes the extra mile. Thanks Ronnie!

Ronnie is one of the most knowledgable, innovative, and all around nicest guys that I know. He's got a couple of grip frames, panels, and hammers on deck for me. I can't wait to see them! I'll make sure to post up pictures.

71- make sure to talk to him about rear sights too!

that is one sweet build!! I love the shorter barrel and the contoured grip swells! Ronnie has one for me I'm eagerly awaiting as well. And it will be my first custom I'm having built hope it looks as great as yours although I haven't seen anything he has built that I don't like! Congratulations and awesome ruger!!

When it's all done, please post it up on the forum, as I, and lot's of other folks, would love to see and hear about it!

I
I certainly will! It will be an over sized 6 shot 45colt with recessed case heads smith style 5 1/2 barrel wells #9 grip brass with blue. Can't wait!!!!
Bowen has pics in the "Workshop" section of his website of a Ruger 45 Colt with a 5.5" Smith Barrel, and I've thought it is about the coolest gun ever. I can't wait to see yours, and I bet it will be every bit as nice as that Bowen, or even better.

Check out this page from the singleactions dot com forum. It shows off a very similar lightweight bisley in 45 Colt that Ronnie built. It has a 3.5" barrel, scallops through loading gate/recoil shield, aluminum Potato Judge Jr grip frame, wallnut stocks with palm swells, and a super cool ejector button that allows a little extra ejector rod travel.

Only thing I'd do different for me would be to have the cylinder fluted. Thanks for sharing!

Ronnie is now fluting the cylinder for me as well. It is surprising how very little weight is actually saved from fluting a cylinder- maybe half an ounce, if that. However, I love the looks of flutes, and it does add to the tally of weight saving measures, even if it's only a tiny bit.

Very aggressive scallops, which I like! Most gunmakers scallops aren't very deep, don't look good to me, and save less weight. If you look at the four Harold Croft Lightweight Colts from the 1920s, the scallops on those guns are super aggressive, and at least one has the the metal releaved all the way flat with frame on both sides. That's a little much for me, but Ronnie's got it just right!
