I’ve always wanted the BFR in 30/30, but you're right about their awkward looks. I can’t imagine they are “handy” either.

In the end it makes more sense to have a carbine shoot a pistol cartridge. (At least you squeeze a little more performance out of the long barrel.)

Than it does to squeeze a rifle cartridge into a pistol.

Although the 30/30 in a Contender is a lot of fun.

One day at the range I had my TC/Contender with a .375 Winchester heavy barrel w/muzzle brake on it and the guy next to me had a BFR 45-70 10" barrel. We traded off 5 shots. To me & him the Contender had slightly less recoil. You wouldn't want to shoot either one for any length of time. I had a lot of Contender barrels over the years and never fancied getting a 45-70.

True that on the 30/30 Contender. I've had that barrel as well as a 35 Remington and 375 Winchester.

IMO, a rifle & pistol same caliber combination is as valid today as it was in the early days of firearms. Choose a caliber that suits your needs that can be used in both, for what ever the situation. In a Walking Dead scenario, do what you gotta do. Not looking for long range sniper duty.
Since the .357 mag isn't offered in a semi auto, not that I'm aware of anyway, even if there was, I'd get a lever gun. I do have Ruger .44 carbine & Deerfield, but might still op for a lever in .44. That combination would about cover most of my needs. I'd find room to carry a good .22 for squirrels & such (Which reminds me I haven't shot my AR7 in a long while 🤔).

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a "Blackhawk convertible in 22LR/22Mag".
Marlin 1894 44 Mag/44 SPC - Super Redhawk and Super Blackhawk

M1 Carbine - Blackhawk

Ruger PC Carbine 9mm - 5 semi-auto
pistols and Blackhawk 357/9mm convertible

10/22T and other 22's - Multiple pistols and revolvers

10/22M - Blackhawk Convertible 22LR/22MAG

Hi-Point 45 ACP Carbine - 2 1911's and 6 revolvers

Recently sold TC/Contender 30/30 barrel and Marlin 336 as well as Contender .222 and .223 barrels. Kept the matching rifles.

I only have three that fit the caliber combo category. It wasn’t something I had planned on or thought I had a need for. It was just something that worked out that way. Both of the Ruger pistols are 3 screws purchased new in 1970.

That's not a Blackhawk, if that's what you're trying to illustrate. It's a Single Six.
Wish I still had one.

I happen to have a kinda odd one. A Contender in 357 Max.For deer it works well to about 150 yards. Being originally from MD we had to use slugs. Shot lots of deer with sabots. Gave that slug gun to my daughter. It is a bang/flop gun. I bought a couple Savage smokeless powder muzzleloaders. Much cheaper to shoot and was an easy 150 yard shooter. Literally shot more than 50 deer one shot each. The Contender in 45-70 got used on one deer. It was no fun to shoot. Shot one moose and one(wounded) toothy critter with the 41 mag guiding in Alaska and an elk here in Wy.All one shot kills...in and out at short ranges. Also shot an elk at about 40 feet with my Wilson Combat 45...3 shots 2 steps and down.Surprising how some cals work at short ranges. Only thing I ever used any mag rifle on was another(wounded) toothy critter and a moose in Alaska...375 H&H otherwise 30-06 or smaller worked fine on anything else. I have a Remington 141 pump in 35 Rem that I load 180 gr pistol bullets in to shoot deer here at home in Wyoming
