When did Ruger switch from the walnut grip on the Redhawk to the rosewood grips?

Which do you prefer? I am torn, the rosewood is more of a reddish whereas the walnut is more of a brown.

Is one more durable than the other?

BTW, I am looking to put them on a 4" RH

American walnut is not as hard as Rosewood. In my opinion Walnut takes a better finish and looks much better than Rosewood. Both are hard durable woods.

I also prefer walnut. Not only is it easier to work with and finish, but I like the darker color. In addition, I can get hold of walnut and don't know where I would get rosewood.

Here is my SP101 wearing the new walnut 'inserts' I just finished making for it.

Either one is much better than the plastic inserts that came on this gun
