Anyone got any recipes for loading the 45 Colt for a Ruger NM Blackhawk using Nosler .451 250 grain JHP over either Alliant Blue dot or IMR 800X, and using Remington 2 1/2 Large Pistol primers ?? I'd like to get somewhere around 1000-1100 fps.
I have a bunch of the Remington primers I need to use up, and no Winchesters, and no Winchester primers on my dealers shelves.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !!! Thanks

Your Remington primers (LP) will be fine in your NM Ruger 45. If you want to use 800X the Hodgons #26 manual states with 250 gr bullets that 9.5grs will give you about 850 fps, depending on barrel length, this with 15,900 cup. Stepping up to 12.5 grs will produce about 1170 fps at 23,600 cup. Always start low & work up. Its a good idea to have several reloading manuals, rather than ask for reloading info on the internet.
You should be fine at around 11-11.5 grs for 1100 fps. Cup (copper units of pressure) is no longer used for pressure measuring, I think everyone is using psi, might be wrong here, its happened before.
Didn't find any data for Blue Dot, its had mixed reviews in many calibers.

My Nosler Manual includes data for Blue Dot and that 250-grain JHP of their's in the .45 Colt, and even Rem 2 1/2 primers, but the velocities are no where near 1000 to 1100 fps. The data listed is 10.4 to 11.4 grns. of Blue Dot for 700 to 800 fps from a 7.25" Douglas test barrel.

I don't know if this will help, but I use a home cast Lee 255 gr. SWC in front of 14 gr. of the old Hercules Bluedot and CCI 300 primer for a chronographed 1140 fps. in my 7 1/2" BH convertible. This is a "Ruger only" load, and would produce higher pressure with a jacketed bullet.

13 grs of HS-6 will get you the velocity you want. It's a little stiff, it's Linebaugh data, but fine in a Ruger.....FWIW, Dennis (I've used 14.0 grs for 1160 fps in my 7.5" BH)

You must remember that Bluedot is tempture sensitive, it can build excessive pressure in temps below 40°.
So if your are building near max loads in summer temps they may show excessive pressure in the winter.

I like BD but don't use it when temps are going to be below 40°

If I had to follow that guideline living in Montana, I'd only be able to shoot half the year!

I've heard and read this temperature theory before. In 30 years of using Bluedot, I've never seen any pressure spikes happen.

I've never seen that either with Blue Dot, although I know pressures can spike if you switch from standard to magnum primers with Blue Dot. I always use standard primers with Blue Dot.

About 13 grains of Blue Dot will get you 1,000 fps with a 250-260 grain bullet.
