Redhawk and Super Blackhawk Opinions

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Well I have an update for those interested. Let me know what you think of this deal so far. Still working on part of it.

Redhawk - holding off on this for now. Still talking and a deal could be made anytime now.

Super Blackhawk with the ammo and gun belt - This was the one I really wanted. My preference is the SA. Been wanting this type for many years. This is my first of what I am sure will become many. I will keep the story short due to the length of this post and most information has already been discussed. I told my guy that due to the price I was going to think on it. After some discussion it came down to him wanting enough to replace it with a new CC and price was negotiable. I thought to myself, HMMMMM, what are you looking to get? It all came to a trade. YES! A trade. He is now the proud owner of my SA XDE single stack 9MM and I am now the proud owner of my first Ruger Super Blackhawk with the extras.

What do you think of that trade? The XDE is brand new in the box. Just an FYI.

I couldn't have left that Redhawk behind.
Single actions are a dime a dozen to some of us! LOL

But ya done good …. Congrats

I would have done that congrats. After 15 years of polymer pistols, I'm over it. I still have one Glock 43 for pocket carry but everything else is all metal. Revolvers, 1911s and one p226 legion. Plus I'm up here in Alaska and animal defense is a big deal to me so I tend to get excited about bigger bore stuff.

Well, a SA traded off to get a Super Blackhawk & some extras,, Hmm, let me think,,,! YOU DID QUITE WELL!

Now,, since your gun funds didn't take a hit,, work on getting the Redhawk.

And,, you've stated that the SBH is your first SA handgun. I HOPE you've already experienced shooting other SA handguns,, so you'll understand HOW to properly grip the SBH, and let the recoil ride a bit.
Many people find the square backed,, dragoon style grip frame to be a bit punishing to the knuckles.
If you haven't shot one of these before,, may I suggest you get some very mild loads to start with? Moderate .44 Spl loads will be great. Work up to the magnum stuff.

Thank you for the fantastic advice. I was going to ask what loads I can use in this. I have much to learn for sure. From what I have been told the SBH is an animal all its own. I have shot other SA but not anything at this level. Any input / advise is welcome and appreciated. What is considered a "moderate" .44 spl? I assume that the fact you brought it up means the SBH can handle the .44 spl. Are there any other loads that I can use with the SBH? Wow. That is a "newbie" question. But don't know if you don't ask :)

First off,,, ASK questions! Do NOT apologize for it appearing to be a "newbie" question. If a person asks an honest question, then they should politely receive an honest answer. NONE of us were born with any knowledge,, we all had to learn things at some point in our lives. And asking questions is how we learn!

Ok, Yes,, the .44 mag revolvers can easily shoot .44 Spl ammo, as the .44 Spl is just a shorter case. In fact,, it's the parent case developed prior to the .44 mag.
A moderate & easily manageable load if you reload,, is what's known as the "Skeeter Skelton" load. 7.5 grns of Unique powder,, under a 240 grn cast SWC bullet. It's quite popular in both types of guns.
As for other calibers that can be used in the .44 mag,, there are a few. The 44-40 can be used if you have a spare cylinder that accepts the case. (Kinda like the 9mm/357 convertibles).

Since you are a bit new here,, and you list South Carolina as home,, may I ask what town in SC are you from? See,, I'm fairly close to SC here. I can be in Spartanburg or Greenville in about an hour. My boys live in Seneca & Six Mile.
If you are close enough to where you could visit me,, here's an invite!
I own a gun range.
I hold the East Coast Gathering here.
And I have some Ruger SA handguns you could try out.
I'm a NRA instructor among my several credentials.
I can offer you the opportunity to visit,, try out some stuff, and help you work up to the knuckle buster that the .44 SBH can be known as.

Would you like to visit?

Thanks for all the information. I am in Lexington, SC. I will accept the invite for sure! Let's get together, maybe in a PM, to get the details for a date and the location. I am looking forward to it.

I was taught that if both parties are happy, then it was a good trade. And never second guess after the deal is done! I would take Contender up on the invitation as well.

Most of my favorite revolvers are all 44 specials. I only have 2 44 magnum revolvers. One I only shoot 44 specials in or an equivalent load in 44 magnum brass. and the other is a ruger bisley that I shoot a stouter load in. You can definitely do the same in your new gun. Enjoy it!

Ahh, Lexington! I have a brother from another mother who lives in that area. That's not too far away. I've been to Mid-Carolina gun range several times. As a competitor & RO for the USPSA Area matches they held there.

I'll PM you!

Smart! and lucky to have the opportunity as a "newbie" to get a dose of good honest medicine from a sincere sort like Contender. Neve met him but you can just sense it.

You are a good man and representative of the gun sports/hobby Contender!

Not trying to revive an old thread but wanted to update anyone who cares "LOL" that I did finally receive the SBH 44 mag and all I can say is WOW! This will not work out well for my bank account for sure. It only takes one like this to start an addiction with the Ruger SA. I am sure it will go much deeper into the rabbit hole for me. I know how I am, and I am fine with that. What an experience. Thanks again to everyone in helping me with this acquisition. Not to pat myself on the back here but I must say with this weapon and holster setup I look AWESOME! HEHE
HEHE

Congratulations! Glad you are happy with the setup!

A couple years ago I was watching Tombstone and drinking a rum and coke. I did a search for Rugers for sale, found an add from WMG here for a Super Blackhawk 3 Screw. I joined up, made contact, and bought it. Now, a couple years later I have 20 various Ruger SA's, plus a several more Henry and Marlin lever guns. So, yes- you have taken the first step into a very addictive and wallet-draining hobby. But, may I add, satisfying too! I've pretty much stopped drinking, but I'm still buying Ruger's!

I could really mess you up and tell you to look up Ronnie Wells- RWGripframes. But I won't do that…🤣

Oh- mustn't forget Chigs Grips either!
