Hi, I purchased a Red Eagle standard 1950 vintage. The person I purchased it from had sent it into Ruger years ago for refurbishment. They reblued the pistol including the bolt. My question is should I remove the blue from the bolt so it is in the "white"?

Also, does it hurt the value to touch up the red eagle medallion on the grip? Thanks, John

Hmmm…. Hope Rugerguy chimes in cause I doubt Ruger would blue the bolt.

Don't know about your other questions …. Sorry

if its a 1950s vintage , yes the bolt should be in the white, and all too easy to "undo" any bluing,,,, is the whole bolt blued?? the factory usually polished off the front half of the bolt , the exposed part you can see through the ejection port, so very easy to replicate, or better yet just dip the whole thing in such as 'naval jelly' and remove the bluing, but remember the bare metal NEEDS to be oiled, kept oiled , or it will rust....as for the medallion last time I had done any research and work on those old ones I believe it was 1970s, early on, Ford Mustang, red paint that was the closest to the "hand painted" medallions that were done by Alex Sturm back in 1949...its been a while...:cool:;)
........try and take a picture or two, to show us:rolleyes:

Touching up the red grip medallions will not hurt value as the pistol is no longer original since it has been reblued.

It's just the back half of the bolt that is blued. I asked the person I purchased it from if the bolt was all in white when he sent it to Ruger in 2014 but he couldn't remember ( he sent the pistol to them because something was broken, not to be refurbished. Ruger called him and asked him if he wanted it refurbished and reblued for an extra fee and he said yes, which as far as it being a 1950 Red Eagle might not have been the best idea). The rear sight and the bolt stop appear to be correct for the 1950 serial # according to the Hiddleson book. His book shows "long throw" and "short throw" magazines. I don't understand what that means? I believe this pistol to be a "type XI" , late 1950?

RENE would say it's a Type 6 (VI) . . . not a Type 11.

I'm guessing your bolt is original. JMHO

VERY nice pistol! 😁

Yes, type VI. I don't know my roman numerals .
You think the bolt was originally blued ?

The reason I am confused is in Hiddleson's book it says "C, this all blue bolt was used on Standard automatics from 12214 through the end of Standard automatic production ". My serial # is 10295 ( below the number stated.)
By "all blue" I believe he means the back half was blued behind the ejection port opening.

as I said in my reply above your gun and that serial number, the bolt should be in the white, the whole thing ,it is when it goes back and gets redone or the bolt replaced, or it was reblued by just about anyone (gunshop or the factory) then it is white in the front half and the rear will be blued, they polish off the front portion ,that what you see looking into the ejection port, with the bolt forward ( closed)........
here are the early parts for example............and some others
