Well as i get these two early Flat Tops together...one is a late 1957 and the other one is a early 1959.. i am finding that i need parts and i see small changes and i am wondering if anyone knows when these changes to the early Flat Tops happened....i see the cylinder pins are different...one has a straight pin and the other one has a pin with a like a built in washer on the end...i see the rear micro sights appear to be the same but i see one has a screw with the serrations on the bottom of the head of the screw for the adjustments to work properly and has a witness mark in the top...
I can not find these small changes listed anywhere...so any help will so be appreciated...thanks in advance

You need to subscribe to the Red Eagle News Exchange. The RENE assists in this type of information. The Reference Guide is what we use to answer such questions. Contact our own chet15,, a member here to subscribe. WELL worth the money.

Now, according to the RENE, the screws began changing around late 1957. But,,, some have been found on later guns. (parts bin left overs.)
I don't think the collared base pins were ever on the Flattops.

well thank u for the great info....well my late 59 has the collared base pin....Dad's 1957 does not...i know mine has not been fooled with...i will need to subscribe to the Red Eagle News Exchange...thank u for the tip on that too...never knew that would explain it all ....God Bless,John

The .44 Flattops had collared base pins installed beginning around mid-1958 or so or serial numbers in the mid 8000s. The notch in the screw head was also done away with about the same time or maybe a little later. From what you describe, it appears that both your 1957 and 1959 FTs most likely have the correct parts that you questioned.

Agree 100% with Contender, join the RENE, a wealth of information and you will not be disappointed!!

FT44

flattop44 is correct. I was just thinking about the 357's,,, and wasn't thinking about the 44 FT's. My mistake for not including them in my post. Thanks Bill.

those screws were ones provided by the Micro Sight Co. and were changed at some time in the past. Micro provided sight for many other makes and models of guns, they sold to Ruger.......
Accro, Elliason, Drake, and others provided gun sights to gun makers, till the makers chose to make their own, due to rising costs??? time element, ( delivery) whatever........

most common of the Ruger rear elevation screws was #6-48 X .125 ( 1/8) thread length

well thank u my friend...we have tried a regular 6-48 screw and while the threads work...without the serrations on the bottom...no accurate way to adjust the sight....so no one has a idea where to find one of these?.....are these that rare?....God Bless,John

Ruger will send you a free screw of the correct type. The sights you have are being used again on the New Model Flat top Blackhawks. Ask for a screw for one of those.

The collared cyl pin is no longer used on NM Super BHs since 2012. Earliest noted S/Ns of SAs with collarless base pins are as follows:

.357 Blackhawk: 38-18679, 2012
.41/.45 Blackhawk: 48-57763, 2012
.30 Blackhawk: 51-44885, 2012
Super Blackhawk: 87-96036, 2012 (87-81559 has a collar)

"Cyl pins just prior to this change had a different head design than the "old style" as well. The blue pins had four cut grooves and the stainless pins had 3 cut grooves." Chet15

Ruger continnually makes small changes:

From Kyle @ Ruger:
"Part of our "Lean Manufacturing" standards is finding new ways to produce firearms while reducing production costs. It's actually less expensive to use a stainless steel part and to apply a black oxide finish [some screws] than it is to produce an alloy steel part and to send it out to the blue department."

~2014 blued hammers and triggers changed to stainless on blued guns.

~ 2013 Redhawks switched to a firing pin bushing screwed in from the rear.

~ late 2015 Fired case no longer included with guns (began in 2000).

2012 Internal locks were phased out in on those models that had them (began in 2005).

2012 Earliest noted S/Ns of SAs with collarless base pins are as follows:

.357 Blackhawk: 38-18679, 2012
.41/.45 Blackhawk: 48-57763, 2012
.30 Blackhawk: 51-44885, 2012
Super Blackhawk: 87-96036, 2012 (87-81559 has a collar)

2009 Steel ejector rod housings on SBHs and Bisleys. Blackhawks began transitioning to steel soon after.

2009 Rear sights changed to steel with bird cast into tang.

2009 CCH New Vaq eliminated.

2008 Blued cast steel rear sight body with Ruger bird cast into tang.

2007 Laminated wood grips (Altamont replace Letts when they closed) or black 'plastic'; solid walnut or solid wood of any kind phased out.

2006 Billboard message moved to the bottom of the barrel.

2004 to 2012 phased in smooth triggers instead of grooved on SBHs:
hammers, triggers and ejector housing attachment screws used on blue models are all stainless as their blued counterparts were eliminated. The screw is black phosphated (if worn shiny they will not take bluing.) Occasionally Ruger substituted SS parts when they were temporarily low on blued parts inventory. But it has become standard practice because these parts in blue can no longer be ordered, and are listed as discontinued. Stainless can be blued however, by those refinishers specializing in it.

~2000 Aluminum alloy grip frames have been powder coated instead of anodized for several years now.

~ 2000 Rear sight blade with hump began.

1999 steel replaced alloy ERHs on Vaqueros.

1996 to 1999 All frames rear surface and grip frame ears raised for universal fit of Bisley grip frames

1980s past 1983 studded barrel for ejection rod screw eliminated.

1985 pointed ejector rods phased in.

1978, Jan., Barrel warning began on the left side.

well thank u for the great info...i did call Ruger and they told me that they do not have that screw ....but going over my old notes...i remembered a supplier of very hard to find parts and made the call...and to my amazement...they had both sight springs in stock which i bought 4 to use for both guns and their very last one...the correct rear sight screw with the serrations on the bottom and the indicator on the top...very costly...but i have them incoming...finally getting to piece this back together...God Bless,John
thank everyone for all the kind words and all the help....truly appreciate it more than u all know....love this place
