They've been working on cloning a mammoth for a while. Digging up bones to extract viable DNA and introducing this DNA into elephant surrogates.

The vital difference in the recent experiments is that they are using frozen DNA in their attempts. The book/movie postulated that the DNA came from amber, which is MUCH older. So the frozen stuff might work better.

I wonder who will be the first to claim they killed one with a 22LR. If it can be done to a modern day elephant (google it), it should apply to a wooly mammoth....unless the 'wooly' is too thick.
