I have used epoxy appliance enamel to good effect. Once. :) I would do it again, though. I stripped the frame of the previous finish and smoothed it up some first. All I had was gloss, which didn't look too bad, but I think a matte finish (if one can be found) would be better. I haven't tried de-glossing this one because I'm afraid I'd mess up the whole thing.

If you go this route, pay attention to the instructions on the can about curing time. I think they recommended a week for the full cure. And get that frame as clean as humanly possible before spraying. "Clean" as in degreased so the paint will stick.

well going to try it tommorow have afriend who has a walnut shell bead blaster i'll try wish me luck and any last min advice tonight would help.Mike PS thanks J

I believe you can buy new ones from around $30+.... Midwayusa.com, Brownells.com, E-gunparts.com, Ruger.com to name a few. Or, I'll bet if you put up a WTB ad here in the Classifieds you'd get a hit or three.

do they come all pretty and everything? and i just traded axr3 red to gregmiester but to tell the truth i kinda want to try to use glass media on one and paint it with epoxy appliance paint like ol whatshisname did but try to find some that is semi gloss if it works great if it don't????Mike.

I've had good success an alloy parts with Wheeler Cerama-Coat and Dupli-Color High heat 1200 degrees ceramic paint. The Wheeler product goes about $20 a can and Dupli-color about $6; both are bake on.
This Single Six grip frame was done with the Dupli-Color:

FWIW, I once tried to refinish one with KRYLON epoxy flat black rattle-can paint. Followed the directions to the letter . . . clean . . . time between coats . . . long cure time, etc. Looked fantastic . . . but when it got a little Hoppe's #9 on it, it just wiped right off.

Just FYI.

:D

I have been told that if I had oven-baked the KRYLON it would have been OK, but I haven't tried that yet.

Use bits of wire coat hangers to suspend parts from an oven rack so that no part that will show later is touching anything. I've used 3hrs at 325° with good results. Stinks some.

thanks edlman will do that also along with the dura coat ceramic thingie,Mike
For $6 you really have nothing to lose. Let us know how it turns out!

Agreed. That Duracoat Ceramic frame looks VERY nice and, much as I like how mine turned out, if that's a durable finish then I'd definitely go that route instead of the Appliance Enamel.
