Random thought.. Why does the SR9 get so hot?

After shooting the XDm I noticed it gets nowhere near as hot as the SR9. Any time I take the SR9 to the range I have to set it down and let it cool down before I leave...

What about the SR9 makes it get so hot?

Conrad, that's weird, I never noticed mine getting hotter than any of my other pistols. Are you talking about the barrel or the pistol in general?

Cheese, I'm talking about the barrel. It gets to hot to touch. Mind you this is after a lot of quick fire. The XDm gets hot too... But it cools down much faster.

I've never really noticed my SR9 get any hotter than any other pistols I have/have shot. Maybe your XD cools quicker cause it has a smaller barrel? Less to cool down? Also less to get hot? Just a guess honestly but I think it makes sense.

yeah my SR9 gets hotter then the other guns i have shot, i figure because it has a slightly higher mag capacity and i shoot it a little faster maybe, or because I go through 500 rds an hour lol

My XDm has a higher cap than the SR9... I think it's because the SR9 is thinner... Has less "meat" to dissipate heat.

Does your XDm have the same barrel length as your SR9? If the SR9 has a longer barrel, then more powder is being burnt inside the barrel, also more friction is occuring as the bullet rubs against more barrel.

The slide of mine stays pretty hot in the front of the slide...but I shoot 17 rounds at once, in a steady progression....sometimes I'll do 3 mags at once....pretty good bit of heat moving through, plus it's stainless so it's going to stay hot longer than other steels.

Will take my dad's P95 and XD40 to the range and compare next time.

I just noticed the SR9 barrel is thicker than the XDm barrel. Maybe it just holds the heat in?

Who cares?

Some people Concealed Carry to and from the range, if you put a solid number of rounds through the SR9 and it retains heat for a while, you have to shoot it and then let it cool.

Just gives you time to bring out a .22 or something and plink for a few more minutes.
