Is the P94 considered to be a 1911 clone. I've noticed lots of different sizes of the great 1911 design by many companies.

I remember reading somewhere that the P85 was originally based on the 1911 but of course with rugers own twists to it. That being said the P94 being 9 years later was by that time had been redesigned.

I don't remember when or where I read that but I've had a lot of head injuries in my life, so if I'm wrong, sorry.

Thanks Paine for the info....I also remember somewhere about the way it was designed. Ruger used the same operating system with the floating barrel as the 1911. It was such a good design that many manufactures based some of their guns on it. The latest is Taurus.

There are two barrel designs of the P94.

The earlier link design of the P94 barrel was much closer to the Browning link design than the newer cam design barrel. The cam design barrel is very much along the lines of the Sig design, both influenced by Browning, even though the earlier link design is much closer to Browning design.

Older design:

You can see the link that swings at the bottom of the barrel labeled "57"

Newer design:

No swinging link but a cam setup.

Ruger's earlier design (link) is much closer to the 1911's. Not sure I would use the term "clone" though.

This thread got me looking at my pistol. This is gonna sound crazy because from what I understood the camblock is supposed to be the difference between the P-944 & P-94 pistols. My pistol I bought NIB around 2000 probably has the catalog number on the box P-944T. The serial number is 340-90##T. Rugers site showed the manufacture date to be 1999. It has the swinging link barrel. I am not disappointed in my pistol it has been problem free from day one. It does make the whole P94/P944 difference more blurred. I am starting to think the only real difference is caliber.
As to the OP. Every semi-auto pistol on the market today borrows from John Moses Brownings designs but a DA/SA alloy framed service pistol is a long way from being a 1911 clone. More like a very distant relative.
