The XR-3 is the grip frame on the first Single Sixes and the early Blackhawks, the XR-3RED is a slightly "updated" redesigned frame that was designed to help out with recoil. Here is the best Internet source I know of on the subject:

Your question asks the difference between a red and a XR-3 red. I think maybe you're reading posts by people using the term "red" as a quick way of saying XR3-RED. I could be wrong.

The XR3-RED is an off-shoot of the Super Blackhawk design.

This is a XR3-RED grip panel setting on a Super Blackhawk grip frame. Note that it's simply shorter on both, the upper and lower ends but the profile is the same.

the main thing ive noticed on the feel is that the xr3-red puts your knuckles further away from the back of the triggerguard. its also a slightly larger grip.

Thanks for showing us this picture. In all the years that I have collected Rugers I was not aware of this. Thanks again.
