A buddy just showed me his oldOldOLD 10/22.....besides being very weather worn, it appeared to be a different model than normally seen:

1) Longer barrel by about 2";
2) It had an under-barrel tube magazine.

It was some kind of family heirloom handed down from a great uncle. He didn't know much about it.

I don't recall seeing any tube magazine 10/22s.

Comments/solicitation of information.

Doesn't sound like a factory produced Ruger 10/22... sounds more like a Marlin, Savage, Remington, or Mossberg.

I'll be going over in the next few weeks & take a better look.

Re: "Marlin M60'.....there were superficial similarities....but the magazine tube was about 3/4 length of the long barrel.

And.....'HE' kept calling it his '10/22'......

Yes, I can see further exam/photos are needed.

Thanks for the tips.

A friend of mine was looking to get a rifle for use at Project Appleseed events. The Ruger 10-22 was recommended.

He showed up at the next event with a Marlin 60. When asked as to why he did not get the 10-22 his reply was "Well, it's a 22 that holds 10 shots! That's not a 10-22?"

The Marlin 60 preceded the 10/22 by a few years (1960), when the 10/22 was introduced in '64 as a companion to the 44 Carbine. Some mention at the time of WHR using the Marlin bolt and blowback design adapted to his rotary mag but it's all history now. The Marlin is a fine rimfire in it's own right, over 11 million sold!

Chevy and Ford. If your friend honestly cannot tell a Ruger from a Marlin I'd start ignoring his firearms wisdom about now!

Sounds like the Marlin 99, it had a shorter mag tube than the 60, and a barrel band like a 10/22.

I bet the Marlin model 99 is it...looks a lot like a M-1 carbine , just what a 10/22 carbine looks like . Has the barrel band and everything....you got to look close to tell the difference between the Marlin and Ruger. I had forgotten about that one.
