I need some help from some of the experts here. I finally got up the nerve to field strip my bull barrel mark iii. As I was taking it apart the bolt fell out onto the counter. Didn't seem like a big deal. However, upon starting to reassemble, I saw on the Ruger video that the first thing to do was make sure the firing pin stop was in place. Mine was not there and could not find it anywhere. I called Ruger and they sent a new one but i cannot gets the new one installed. It goes in barely then stops. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well I just found the answer to my question. The Ruger reassembly video shows a solid pin in that location. However I just learned that the newer Mark III's have roll pin in that location giving the appearance of a missing pin. Very aggravating, but also very relieved to have successfully completed my first field strip. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Not a new problem, Ruger went with a roll pin for the stop pin around 2006 because the solid ones tended to fall out and folks were dinging their chambers. Many have been caught thinking the stop pin is missing upon reinstallation because the roll pin is harder to see. It looks like this one-

Ruger has gone back to using solid firing pin stop pins again so some of the newest pistols don't have this issue.

That is good to know also since there will probably be more Rugers in my future I hope. I have the Mark III and a 10/22 sporter that I love to shoot. Now I just need to find some more ammo!!

You're not alone in that quest. There's a lot of folks out looking for a sufficient supply of .22LR ammo, either individually boxed or bulk packed.

BassPro in my neck of the woods had some last weekend. They are keeping it all behind the counter and you have to ask for it. We were limited to two 100 round boxes each of Winchester Super X. I was happy to find that! It is quite scarce around here.

The gun can be safely fired indefinitely without that part in place. However, there is then nothing to prevent the firing pin from hitting and peening the chamber (and possibly damaging itself, too) if the gun is dry-fired.

I've seen a MKII that was so damaged by this that it wouldn't/couldn't chamber ammo any more. I found the missing pin in the original box (the owner "never could figger out what that was for") and reinstalled it, then filed the "divot" out of the chamber. Last I heard, that gun was now again working good as new. I've often wondered if he still dry-fires it, or learned his lesson. (I haven't seen him in over a decade.)

Ruger has discontinued the roll pin for a reason, they bend! I replaced all of mine with the solid pin, it is stronger, all the later guns have the solid pin

Ruger did go back to the solid firing pin stop in new pistols to prevent damage to the chamber wall. Dry firing to perform maintenance is fine but if you plan on doing it repeatedly for trigger control practice take care.

Just another example of a customer's gun with a damaged firing pin stop from excessive dry firing practice. The pin appears normal when viewing from the outside of the bolt.

Thanks for that info. Ruger did send me a solid pin to replace the one I thought was lost. Looks like it may be a good idea to go ahead and replace the roll pin.
