Position of holster

Watching episodes of "Bosch" over the last week or two made me notice that virtually all of the LEO's in the show wear their holster (IWB or OWB) at around 4 o'clock or even a bit further back. I know its just TV but much of this show seems to be realistically done. Maybe its just my age but I find it hard on my shoulder (which admittedly has some serious rotator cuff damage) to reach that far back. My preferred location is right about 3 o'clock, or even 2 o'clock, which requires me to wear a closed jacket or an untucked shirt. I used to pocket carry most of the time but I have become more concerned with the total inability to draw from my pocket while seated, such as when driving, but from an OWB holster at 3 o'clock its pretty accessible.

I use crossdraw just in front of my left hipbone most of the time. That 3:00 is terribly uncomfortable if you do any stooping or bending to pick up stuff.
That location also interferes with the seat belt buckle on my Chevy pickups.

I bet it is all about what the technical advisor told the director and he/she agreed nothing more. I have not seen the show, but none I ever watched got all the cop stuff right. Remember first and foremost it's entertainment and if someone thinks that looks cool or "I seen so and so do it, lets do it." That's much more important then any realism.

I'm a 3:30-4:00 too but see no problem with 2:00 or 3:00 if that works for you.... better than noon for sure. :)

I have been wanting to try appendix carry. I like the idea of it because it seems like it might be the most accessible carry position. My logic is this. I don't think it would be easy to access a pistol on one's ankle when standing. I don't think it would be easy to access a pistol carried in a pocket sitting down. If carrying behind 3 o'clock it could be difficult to access a gun while driving with a seat belt on. The appendix carry position is wide open accessible at pretty much all of those times. I just haven't worked out concealing there yet but I'm going to try to soon.

I'm with Mobuck on crossdraw. But, on the other side as I'm a southpaw. As an added bonus it let's me carry this as a right handed crossdraw with my spare ammo for my primary just behind it. The little NAA sits horizontally along the belt. Lately, these two have been my go to.

I've carried for a lot of years, and have become convinced of several things.
1. Dress to the way you are going to carry, OR carry to the way you dress. I am very consistent in the way I dress, and that's with my shirt out.
2. It's important to carry in the same place daily. At some point you may have to go on automatic and if you have to THINK about where your gun is, it's slows you down. People who aren't used to carrying are sometimes past the need because they forgot they had their gun with them.
3. It's important to carry with proper gear. That includes a good belt and a proper holster. I use a good heavy 1-3/4" belt and predominately Simply Rugged holsters, although there's an excellent holster builder here and I have 5 or 6 of his holsters and like them very well.
4. Consistent with carrying in the same place for years I've carried OWB at a 3:00 position, and since both of my shoulders have injuries it's in a convenient spot to be able to get a hold of my gun with out pain. It's also important to PRACTICE getting a good, consistent, grip on your gun. Grip is the master, (it's critical to have a consistent grip), sights are critical (I call it muscle memory) otherwise you won't bring your gun up high enough to see the sights. Practice dry firing. That's the nice thing about the Taurus G2c and G3c and they both allow you second strike capabilities. I find light switches are a handy "target" and about the right height, and using a 2 hand grip. Don't let me see you using a cup and saucer grip. :D A smooth trigger is what brings it together.

Vito I hear you. When working and standing all day and then walking home, I would pocket carry Kahr CM9 in Dockers style pants. I am now retired.
Hurts my shoulder when holster past 4 o'clock. Same as you. Most comfortable is OWB leather holster. Can even carry full size Ruger SR9. Position is as far forward as possible while still allowing me to bend over to tie shoes.
I have found an ankle holster to be useful at times.

I Carry IWB/OWB at 4-5 o'clock, strong side. With pocket carry weak side for BUG. I used to carry a GP100/SP101, that morphed to a KelTec P-11, or an Chater Arms .44 spcl. My holsters were a Dan Hume, Ken Null, and an Uncle Mike's slide, and a Bianchi nylon holster. Pocket carry—Uncle Mike's pocket holster for Iver Johnson TP-22, Kel Tec P-32, Gen 1 LCP, now LCP Max in a leather pocket holster of unknown origin.

I shoot in Open class, holster at my side. I used to have it forward so it angles in front of you. Two reasons I changed it, 1st is that in any akward position, sitting, crouching etc that holster gets in the way. 2nd When you draw the gun from the hip you bring the gun out of the holster and straight out vs. pulling it over and then up. I thought having it more towards the front would be faster but it wasn't.

I carry IWB at 3:00-3:30. Most of the time it is a full size 1911, other times it is OWB with a 6" STI 10mm 2011. Shoulder holster carry is with a a I Frame S&W .32 long, which got the job done for a friends grandpa on the IPD in the 1920's and 30's. The 1903 Colt Hammerless .32 ACP is IWB left side. If making a day in the truck I use shoulder holster

"Uncle Mike's pocket holster for Iver Johnson TP-22"
Wow Gramps, I had no idea anyone else even knew about those little pistols. I carried one in a hip pocket for years but that created it's own set of problems. Namely having a pistol shaped wear pattern on the outside somewhat negates the concealment idea. Mine was also prone to collect lint in the ejection port which clotted up the extractor. Good little pistol for what it is.

This is my "Miami Classic for my Kel Tec. I'll be making one for my Max9 as well. I can wear it OWB as well.

I mostly pocket carry (Kahr P9/40, PM9/40, LCP MAX). I have rotator cuff issues also but exercising has helped & I can carry OWB at the 4:00 position. But here in FL means wearing something to cover it, as no open carry is allowed. When I do use an OWB (FL winter covered with a light jacket, vest etc) it's with a pancake holster at the 4:00 position.

I've got the mockups made for my Max9. Hybrid Shoulder/OWB, Pocket/ IWB. I'm trying to decide what to carve on them Western floral swirl or Oak leaves.
