I have the oppertunity to buy a .38 Special, Ruger police service-six from a coworker. I'd judge the finish to be 80%-90%. Has some minor surface rust that I think will come off with a little elbow grease. It has the original grips and has the takedown pin is present. The serial number is 151-35xxx. With a 4" bbl. What is the worth of this old revolver. The only mechanical issue I can see is when the hammer is cocked, the hammer goes past full cock and goes back down to the cocking notch. What could be causing this? How much would it cost to repair it if warrented? Thanks.

Sounds like it was modified to DA only. On the Service 6 I recently picked up the DAO was accomplished by grinding the sear notch off the hammer. In that case the only fix is a new hammer.

Value?? Somewhere around $200 -250 the way you described it.

I'm sorry. I didn't explain it very well. The hammer can be cocked, but when you cock it, the hammer will overtravel the sear and fall back forward to rest in SA mode. Thanks.

I bought a Security six in similar condition a year or so ago. Had no mechanical issues, actually shoots real well. Paid $150 OTD from a pawn shop. I would not pay any more than that for the gun you describe.

Far as what you observed while thumb-cocking the hammer goes, that is normal.

A 4" Police-Six with that amount of finish wear wouldn't bring more than $200 or so around my neck of the woods.....and might be a hard sell at that, due to the fixed sights and it being a .38 instead of a .357 .
The main problem there aint that it's an old cop gun. The fact is...the same amount of serching that it takes to turn one of them up will also uncover some old Model-10 Smiths which can be had for the same money. And most folks around here just won't pay more for a Ruger than a simular S&W cost.

I gave $210 for a 95% or better bicentennial version 3 years ago. Mines 38 special, 4", blued no surface rust at all.

I found one advertised in a local paper, and paid $180 for it. It's a well-used .38 special, wearing a Hogue Monogrip and a flat black finish, which may be over stainless. The cylinder face has an S stamped on it.
