Planning to purchase a new 1911. Considering Ruger and Remington. Not really sure which one. Would appreciate comments from members. Thanks.

I am not a 1911 guy but have shot one once. I also have a Ruger but that was just dumb luck.

Being on a Ruger forum, you'll probably get Ruger pushed on you.

I really like mine but wish all the controls were stainless instead of black.

You could also try to post this in the 1911 section.

Good luck,

I have a Ruger SR1911, my first 1911, and it's great! More experienced 1911 enthusiasts seem to consider it a good value for the price. I recently handled a Remington R1 and it seemed pretty nice but if you search some of the forums and ask the "Ruger or Remington" question, it seems the answer is usually "Ruger".

You must be warned however, that 1911's are addicting, and you may find yourself buying more than one!

Check out this review of the Ruger 1911. He also reviews Ruger's commander version.

I had a govt model SR1911. Loved it. My wife ended up loving it too and took it for hers. So I bought an SR1911 CMD which I love. We are now a 2 SR1911 family and enjoying it.

Do you have any near by ranges that rent firearms so you could try both and see which one you like best? I don't think you could go wrong buying either one, when ever you can't make up your mind just buy both :p

I got a SR 1911 recently & I like it. However I'm not a 1911 guy & don't know enough about them to compare it to anything else. I'd suggest researching on the different forum boards & if there is any way you can shooting them both before you choose.

i have a sr1911 and i've shot my fathers r1 enhanced. both really nice guns and i wouldn't kick either of them out of my safe.

You don't say which Remington you are thinking of.

I have both the blue R1, and two Ruger sr1911's, all three of them have been great. I like the look of the Remington, it is a good representation of a GI model that has some enhancements.

The Ruger is a great bargain, if you want a stainless 1911, and you like the way it is set up. If you want to polish it and change out the blued components, you'd be better off with the R1 stainless.

I give the edge to the Rugers because of Rugers reputation for customer service. Remington is owned by a big conglomerate now and I am not sure how solid they are anymore.

I guess I am saying to get the one that looks the way you want and is tricked out the way you want. You can't go wrong with any of them.

If you want it to carry, I would be looking for something lighter, I settled on a S&W lightweight commander.

I own both. I have an issue with my Rem R1 and it will go back to Remington for help. No issues with my SR. The only thing I have had done to the SR is a trigger job. It shoots a lot better than I can.

I would choose Ruger

I have the r1 stainless & the full sized SR1911. I like both, but the ruger goes to the range & the R1 is a safe queen. I just shoot the ruger better - dont really know why. Considering trading the R1. The remington enhanced models look nice.

I've had both and as other have said they are both good pistols. I ended up selling the SR1911, while the R1S has become one of my favorite pistols (FWIW. I just preferred the aesthetics of the R1S more).

One thing that might be worth mentioning: the 1911R1 has a Colt Series 80 style firing pin safety, the SR1911 does not use a FPS. Quite a few folks don't like the the Series 80 stuff, others don't care.

I have to say I agree with you on the looks of the R1S. It is gorgeous! Even my blued one has a very deep rich quality to the finish. Ed

Get the r1 enhanced if getting the remington. I give an edge in quality and accuracy to the remington, but it cost more. Pay a little more than the Ruger and get a Springfield Range Officer. With shipping and transfer mine was around $850. I am not wild about the sights but if you don't carry it they are good. The RO is very similar to the later gold cups.

I have the Sr1911, looked at the Remington before I bought the Ruger. In my neck of the woods the Ruger is cheaper than the Remington (comparing stainless to stainless) and you get more features, not to mention the Ruger Warranty and Customer Service. My SR1911 has been 100% and is my duty weapon.

I have the SR 1911 and like the gun, this particular gun is not magazine sensitive, or ammunition fussy. It runs well and has given me no issues however I really can't warm up to it mainly due to all the lazer etching (which is a personal thing).

I like the GI look of my R1....I find that this is the one I grab if I decide to carry a 1911. The Ruger is a fine gun but the GI style just talks to me.

My main reason though for the remington over the Ruger is the barrel and bushing. The fit and crown finish is better and even on the base model with LSWC it groups better than the Ruger. Despite the Ruger trigger being much better. I think to maximize the Ruger you need to go with a true quality match barrel. To me the quality of the Sr build makes me think the barrel was an after thought.
