I do believe I would be worried about the legality of it's use on humans a bit later- after being attacked.
I know what you're saying, but in today's litigious society you could end up being the bad guy. Besides my Bears spray canister, like all I've seen, is to large for convenient carry. Not a whole lot smaller than a three cell flashlight.

Five projectiles are as much as a can of bear spray! How accurate are you with a 500lb bear coming at you @ 35-40 mph and its head is weaving around?
Seems like the difference of hitting it with a pistol vs a shotgun!

" I've spent the $500, for the smaller less powerful model, so the question is what do I do to check it out and do a review?"

Find a REALLY stupid friend you truly don't like and try it out?

Several of the folks on my church safety team and I tried the Byrna pistol out.... it is one more mean mother is all I can say.... I have no desired to be hit anywhere with one of those balls. I at some time acquired some plastic silohetts ... this is heavy duty plastic about an 8th of an inch think and the Byrna was putting large dents in it and even punched a hole at one point. Maybe next time we go out I'll have something like a water Mellon and we'll shoot it with the Byrna.

One of the guys on the safety team at my church showed me a links to that pistol a few weeks ago and I had meant to look it up for got distracted... I think it is a viable option and might be as good if not better than a lot of spray options. I might jus get one.

While drinking my morning coffee and playing computer games (after checking the news and e-mails), an ad popped up for this. It recommended carrying in a "shoot-me-first" fanny pack. Seems like the risk of being shot would be the same! Just thinking!

Would you recommend one for non-lethal self-defense and, if so, in what type of situation do you see it used in lieu of traditional pepper sprays?

I saw one at a local store - they are larger than I imagined.

Here's one thing I've never understood. What idiot figured out that police officers need to be pepper sprayed and tazed in order to qualify for their use? Following that logic a recruit should be shot with a 9 mm handgun, shotgun and rifle to qualify in their use.
It's to instill confidence that if your sprayed or even tased you can react. A "Blue" gun and rubber baton was issued. You were sprayed then you tried to use your "weapons". It was completely BS as far as I was concerned. Can you imagine going "Lethal" with impaired vision?

Okay, boys and girls, I'm going to break it down for you. Pepper spray, or oleoresin capsicum spray, is not the be-all and end-all. I was a police academy pepper spray instructor/trainer, meaning I trained recruits and other instructors.

Pepper spray will not work on all people. Let me give you an example. You are the father of a newborn. You are carrying your newborn in your arms, and someone comes up to you with the intent of stealing your baby. They spray you. Grab your baby. What are you going to do? You fight back and get your baby back at all costs.

Pepper spray WILL NOT IMMEDIATELY incapacitate you.

Having this in mind, along with other tactics and weapons, will help you know what to do.

You need to be sprayed to know…1) how to, react if you are sprayed, 2) how to act if you spray someone and get the residual spray, and 3) how to decontaminate yourself or the offender.
