A few years ago I was pissed at an animal that was getting into my trash can and knocking it over spewing trash all over for me to clean up. So I decided to put the can in front of my dark screen door and I would be behind the door with my trusty single shot 22 rifle. During the night along comes a dog and tries to get in the can. One shot to its but and it went running home. Then along came a big cat that tried to get in the can. Did you know that a cat when shot in the ass will jump 2-3 feet in the air and then run off. The third animal was a skunk, and it was quite small too. I carefully took aim at its head (thinking if I shot it in the head, it could not spray). Well the shot missed its head and went thru its neck severing its nerve to the back of the animal. It squirted a little then died there, although I waited 2 hours just to make sure it was dead before I went out to get it. I got 2 trash bags and managed to pick it up and get it into the bag. Then I got a 5 gallon pail and put the bagged skunk in the pail with a tight fitting lid and off to the trash truck it went.

My brother and cousin were sprayed many years ago while rabbit hunting on my Aunts farm. She told them to remove all their clothes and hang them on the outside of the barn to air. The smell was so bad the following morning she had them bury the clothes. Luckily I wasn't tagging along with them that day.

My neighbor has a small fox family living on the far border of his property from our fence line. When I went out with our dogs early this morning I could smell skunk. When I went back inside I went upstairs so I could see over the privacy fence and sure enough I could see a skunk carcass over by those woods. There's likely a smelly fox or two over that way! Better the fox than my dogs though.

While rabies is uncommon here, our problem is an animal control system that tries to hide the infection rate. A while back we had an obviously rabies infected raccoon in the neighborhood.

It was Saturday and a call to animal control resulted in a response that no one was available. Apparently the football games on TV were more important.

I finally had to threaten to shoot it myself and miraculously someone arrived in about twenty minutes.

The the, literally, cover up began. The officer was unable to properly use the snare to capture the animal. And insisted the coon "only" had distemper. She finally caught it and left.

I later contacted animal control to find out what the animal had. They denied they even came out.

Me being me, I contacted my county supervisor. Turned out the animal was rabid. Apparently, there's a lot more paperwork if rabies is involved.

But that's what happens when folks are hired for equality instead of capability.

That's what happens when politics is more important than the public's safety.

The thing about skunks is, they aren't aggressive. They are extremely beneficial and if you leave them alone, they leave you alone. Maybe some places they frequently carry rabies. Here, no so much. In a way, they are like four legged bats. They get a bad rep for rabies, but the good they do far outweighs their mythical rabidity.

I agree with Jeepnik,, about normal skunk activity. I have them on my property,, and never bother them. I see them,, I enjoy watching them,, and I know that if left alone they don't cause me any issues.

One thing many don't know is that a skunk can & will dig up & eat an entire nest of yellow jackets. For that reason alone,, I allow them to live around me.

We feed all kinds of critters and birds here. The wife likes to see them and after 6 years have yet to have any problems other than the feed bill for all these freeloaders. :) As I've posted before, if it isn't a threat to me and mine, I let them pass on by.

A week or so ago. I was out plowing snow overnight. Saw something cross the road in front of me. It was skunk. I was not that close to it. It ran up a 4 ft high berm, turned around and looked right at me, giving me evil eye. I did not have the plow down. So the flashing lights must have annoyed it. Not sure what the little guy was thinking. But I had my window half way down. It went up in a hurry. Lol

'The Duke' has 'reduced to possession' (that's bunny cop terminology for killed it and dragged it home) another skunk. After about a week I can pour his feed in the pan w/o holding my breath. If that wasn't enough, he semi-buried it right next to the goats' hay feeder. Guess he's giving payback for having to hang around their unique stench 24/7/365. ;)

When caught in foot trap, use a pole and inject Acetone. They just go to sleep.
Put a blanket over them and haul to safe location.Open door, let get out a bit.Dispatch and get out of there.

"use a pole and inject Acetone."

That method is considered "cruelty to animals" in some states & would be illegal. Please check your state laws before doing this.

Years ago a family of skunks burrowed under the garage. They came out and did whatever skunks do and then went back to rest .eat. or whatever was happening under the floor. They never truly bothered us so long as we didn't make any loud or fast moves in their direction. They are honestly kinda neat to watch. They don't spray till provoked.
