Should I be concerned with the wearing showing on my P90 guide rod? It has only been fired maybe 300 rounds.

Are you lubing the guide rod and recoil spring? My suggestion would be to make sure you are lubing it well, and then recheck after another couple hundred rounds to see how much more wear has been induced. Maybe a new guide rod "may" be needed, but only if you see a lot of new wear after running it some more.

I have seen some P series guide rods look pretty rough, but they still function.

Just my opinion, and take that for what it cost you to read. ;)

Never had a P90, are you certain the spring is not on backwards. My P89 coils fit tighter on one end and this side goes next to the flat/shoulder.

I'll check my spring although my guide rod looks to be the same diameter on either end so wondering why the spring would be tighter at one end or the other?

They wind the spring a bit narrower at one end. This is one way of retaining it better when disassembling (least likely answer), but there will be a correct engineering answer for it. I have seen recoil springs like this, I just know that it retains better on the guide rod, and allows the spring to work better on the muzzle end if it isn't put on backwards.

Like others said the spring should have a specific direction of install.
The rod itself basically is just a place for the spring to ride as the pistol cycles.
If it was mine I would check the spring for a sharp edge on the end by the muzzle side to see if it is causing some of the scratches / wear you see. also check the hole in the slide for a bur or rough edge.
The guide rod is aluminum and can be polished some. Very fine sand paper or scotch bright could be used and then a buffing wheel.

What you show shouldn't impact function of the pistol though. Please report back if you find a bur on the slide. Assume your slide is stainless based on the frame color so you could polish the slide hole a bit too.

Good luck and keep the P-guns alive!!

My guide rod looks pretty much the same, and no issues for the past 15 years, never seems to get worse. Thought about polishing the rod, but never have.

Wide end of the recoil spring goes to the slide, narrow end goes to the guide rode base. If flipped the other way around, the spring might find its way into the hole for the guide rod on the slide and jam it up something fierce.

For me the only place this summer was Ebay.
I have spare parts and purchased some beaters to get spare parts. Even bought a good P345 for a backup and another that was heading to the scrap pile.
*I ran into several groups locally that love "P Series" Ruger's and they are a valuable resource.
*I have my LGS keep an eye out for them (any P in any condition) and started to keep a parts section for mine.
*It has dried up for parts this year. Some here may chime in with recommendations.
OP: Keep looking because they always show up.
Good luck.

FWIW this is my P90 rod with 6,000 or so rounds of mostly Wolf ammo.
If the spring in installed correctly it locks in the grove at the hammer end. It it's backwards it won't.
