P89 Barrel Question

I bought a new P89DC chambered in 9x21. It's supposed to be identical to a regular P89DC save for the barrel chambering. The price was $330, so that seemed pretty fair to me. I bought it because I like to reload odd ball cartridges. Regular 9mm reloading dies and bullets will work, so all I have to find is the cases. At any rate, I'd like to also get a regular 9mm barrel for this pistol. Would I be correct to assume that one should just drop in without it being required to be fitted? If so, anyone know where to get one cheap? It doesn't have to be new.

They used to be very easy to find on Gunbroker, but they are scarce now. There is one on Gunbroker currently for $145 (Buy it Now price). Crazy price if you ask me. I wouldn't pay close to that.

I don't know if one would just drop in. Someone else here will know.

hi Bret, So you bought that huh. I was looking at it but money is tight. I sold a barrel to another member here to do the same thing you are talking about. It does work well but you have to be sure to get the correct barrel. The 89 model has used two different barrel systems. You need the older style if memory serves. The lockup on the old style is a flat surface and the newer barrel has an angled surface.

You should be able to get a barrel for about 60 bucks but it will take a bit of looking.

Post pictures if you need more help.

Take care,

Thanks for the tip on the two different types of barrels. I'll just keep an eye out for a barrel. One will come along some day. I have some Zero 125gr JHP bullets that are designed for 357Sig, but I think they'll also work well in the 9x21.

I think this is the correct barrel but look for yourself.

Interesting topic, but from a different direction.
I have a "regular" 89DC,if possible, what would be needed to convert that to 9x21?

I feel there is two options.
1. bore the current barrel you have 2mm deeper.
2. find a factory 9x21 barrel and drop it in. (If the barrel luckup is the same as I described above)

But why would you want to?

I thought the 9x19 and 9x21 would use the same spring.

The 89X is a 30 luger round so that takes the different guide rod/ spring set.

I have no real knowledge, just guessing based on the guy I sold the barrel to. He said it worked fine.

The above is my understanding as well.
blume357, did you get a pistol that came from the factory with both a 9x19 and a 9x21 barrel?

I went to a small local gun shop today to shoot another pistol. I was talking to one of the guys working there and told him that I have a Ruger P89 chambered in 9x21 on the way. He said "wait, I think we have some of that". He pointed to a couple of boxes on a high shelf and asked me to come around and get them down. Sure enough, they were both Fiocchi 9x21. The dust was so thick that I had to wipe it off to see the price tag of $20.49. That's definitely not as cheap as I'll be able to reload, but it will be nice to run a couple of boxes of factory loaded ammo though it to check the function of the pistol.

Y'all are probably right... I was talking about the 30cal luger barrel... one way to find out just use the original spring and see how it works.

Now, I have a question.. what exactly is 9x21 and how would you re-chamber that barrel to 9x19?

You can not re-chamber to 9x19 from 9x21 but you can go from 9x19 to 9x21. The case is just 2mm longer.

Again I am no pro or gunsmith or anything. Just a guy that likes to tinker with the P-guns but that is my understanding.

Hey Bret,
If you have 9x19 rounds and I know you said you have some 9x21. Will you post a picture of the two sitting by each other. That would clear up any questions too.

Thanks,

The short story is that it's a cartridge created to get around gun control laws in some countries that ban civillians from using "military" cartridges.

From link above...

Italy banned ownership of firearms in the same caliber, as issued to their military. They issue 9x19 so to own the same model a civilian has to buy that in 9x21. Stupid is as stupid does.

I guess my interest is that I like to have the ability to use as many cals with as few firearms as possible.
As someone else posted,he found a couple old boxes of 9x21 for sale and where I am,generally Tampa area,9x19 still doesn't exist in stores.
I don't want to modify what I have to fit,I'd rather buy separate swap-out parts.So,1 gun 2 cals.
Like my CZ82 9-Mak that can run on .380 if needed.

I wouldn't do that, a .380 will be shooting off the extractor instead of being properly headspaced, it also is .010" less in diameter than a Mak bullet is so it will not be accurate at all.

You could break the extractor doing this, so why would you?

I change calibers by changing uppers on my P94. One is 40 and one is 9mm. You can do this with the P89 & 91 models too.

Can you put a P90 upper and mags in a P89 and have it work?
