My Dad gave this to me on permanent loan today.

.....w/ 300 .223 rounds, 6 20 round mags, 5 30 round mags & about 500 strip clips!

He bought it brand new in the 70's. 8)

(this gun hasn't seen the light of day in about 25 years)

Well, at some point, somebody put the A2 handguards on it, which weren't available in the '70s. Those came out about, what, 1985?

I did notice the "updated" handguard... Mine had the old "triangular" version.

Yeah....you guys "caught" me, I put them on there

Here's what it looked like when I picked it up earlier that day.

(The A2 style feels better in my hand :p )

Brings back memories. I too favor the A2 style hand guards but I liked the beefier barrel of the A2 over the skinny thing the A1 has/had. Thanks for sharing nonetheless! Now I need to get and get my next "black" rifle.

Looks good BigJ71.....my Dad told me those 3 prongs on M-16's used to get caught on every small limb & vine in the jungle.

Thanx for the tip.....I'll be sure to hang on to all the old parts.

I can't wait to finally shoot this AR!
