On the local TV news last night: At the courthouse in the next county north a bullet hole was discovered in an upper story window. Using a "bullet trajectory estimate", the Sheriff's office determined the bullet had likely been fired from the west. Investigation led the Deputies to an apartment on the west side of the town square. The resident admitted his pistol had "discharged accidentally while he was applying a hydro-dip finish". Charges are being processed.
Hydro-dipping a loaded pistol??? Seems pretty odd that one would dip the entire assembled(and loaded) gun. Maybe the dude was playing with it(the pistol) and inadvertently fired or ???.
AnyHoo, dimwit is in big trouble. If the bullet had gone 2' in either direction, it would have simply dinged the exterior and probably never have been noticed.

.

IMO, the shooter was a yahoo, who thought it'd be a kick to shoot at the town hall/building across the square, and thought he'd never get caught.

The way I heard the report, the bullet hole was still in his apartment window. Hard to deny that sort of evidence. A smart(er) dude would have taken the window someplace 30-40 miles away and had it fixed.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the guy was sitting in his recliner aiming at the courthouse window when the shot was fired. I'd guesstimate the distance around 40 yards. I was in town today getting some corn but the story wasn't making much impact.

They'd better not put me on a jury in an "accidental shooting" case. There just ain't no such critter. Careless, reckless, deliberate---that's all.

Keep in mind the general public has a much different view of things like this... here is picture of some of the group I was with back in May in Yellowstone... We were looking over the old Army Barracks at the Mammoth Hot Springs and our tour guide mentioned there was a bullet hole in the side of one of the building and over half the group wanted to go see it.

It's like I always say...

I'm surrounded by idiots and embryo's..

Why did he even admit it.. I'm sorry, somebody needs to prove that trajectory in a court of law, or at least they would have until the duffus admitted his guilt.

Blume,
If that bullet had embedded in soft dry wall the Police would just need to check it against his
pistol, and BINGO! No symphony for that dude.

Blume, your picture illustrates history. How old is the bullet hole? Did the tour guide say?

We were in Budapest quite a few years ago now, however, parts of the downtown area still have bullet holes on the outsides of the buildings from WWII. Very interesting to see them.

I suppose one could say the same about parts of Chicago. :D

Why not just be the adult and accept responsibility? Own up to it? Be honest?

Sure this guy did something very stupid but at least he was man enough to stand and say he did it.
