Hey Guys,
While the Wifie and I were in CO. we rode the Cumbres & Toltec Train from Antonito CO. to Chama NM. This was part of the Rio Grande Line at one time. The tracks were laid in 1881 within a 9 month period. That was really fast considering the area where it was laid. Tunnels and bridges had to be built and remember this is at 7,000 to 10,000' and not the best of weather The Tender still had Rio Grande on the side of it.
This trip is about 65 miles of narrow gage old time railroading. Most of the trip is the same as it was in 1880s With some of the same buildings and no modern roads in sight. Of course the scenery is outstanding for the 6 hour trip.
We stopped for a great 4 course lunch at the old work camp at around 9,000'. This camp is where the workers worked and stayed while working on the RR. If only these old buildings could talk. They worked in the winter, BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, and summer.
The ride includes crossing the border 11 times and doing some outstanding switchbacks.. This RR crosses the highest pass of any other RR in the US.
We saw Elk and Mule Deer plus some Antelope.
We probably had it a little bit better riding in the parlor car than the folks of the 1880s did. Two GREAT ladies kept us informed of the sights and made sure we didn't get hungry or thirsty.
Injoy the ride, All Bord

Cool choo-choo train pics!!!!

My family lived abroad in Taiwan back in the 70's. I remember as a kid watching steam engines pulling into the capital city of Taipei. It was quite a sight to see steam powered locomotives chugging through the middle of a major city like Taipei...one of many fondest memories living in a foreign country. Wish I had some pics to share.

Once again Jim I wish we could have met while at Fun Valley. Apparently we share several interests. Here are some pics of our Cumbres and Toltec train ride we took on July 8. Our locomotive was #488. Great fun. We couldn't ride in the Parlor car because my 11 year old daughter was with us, but we did travel tourist class. If anybody else is interested I definatley recommend either the tourist or parlor class.

Once in a while I take the long way home from my parents, through Chama and over Cumbres and La Manga passes. Sure is some pretty country. I've always wanted to ride that train.

Wow! Great Pictures, guys! Thanks!

There's a steam engine ride in the Black Hills of Dakota that runs out of Hill City. I've not been on the train since the '60's, though.

You really need to take the time and ride this train. It is worth the money and the time.

I actually rode this train when I was about 6 years old (circa 1974). I only remembered the tunnels, firebox and the Toltec Gorge until I rode it again this year. All those early child hood memories came flooding back while on the train like de ja vue!

Awesome train pics. And you know I'm a fan. I've ridden coal fired trains before and that trip looks nice. Riding aft of the engine you get a smell from quick burning coal that you won't forget. Thanks for sharing the photos.
