Several years ago, I was on the metal roof of one our buildings using a leaf blower to clean out gutters before a big storm. Roof wasn't that steep. After I finished, I was back around to where the 8 foot step ladder was (top a little below the gutter). I was trying to figure out the best way to get back on the ladder when my feet slipped. I hit the roof. I was able to catch the ladder with my feet on the way down, but it just fell over and I fell partially on it concentrating the impact. I laid there for a bit, then got up, decided I was basically ok, gathered up the borrowed leaf blower and started it up to ensure ok, straightened up the ladder, put everything back away, and then went back to work. Wound up with some spectacular bruises that my wife didn't notice or at least didn’t ask about and some lasting aches and pains; but... I never told my wife as figured I'd get a lecture. Probably should have.

Glad you weren't hurt any worse.
As home owners ladders are a necessary evil, I'm 61, over weight, arthritis in my neck, lower back, and knees. And looking at a knee replacement in the near future. I added a stabilizer to my extension ladder, and always make sure I have someone spotting me when I'm using my ladders. I have no fear of heights but I hate ladders.
Hope you heal fast
Get that knee done. The difference with no arthritis pain and swelling is amazing. Your doctor may push back if you are overweight to extremes. But no worries if you have gained some from slowing down and doing less. At 75 the couch looks better everyday. And a nap is almost mandatory.
Be safe

It was actually too fast for me to cuss and the little goat sound is actually my dog in the van watching me fall. The lady of the house ran out in the yard and asked me if I was okay and did she need to call 911... I had not moved and was laying perfectly still and my answer to her was.... "NO, YES!"
What really makes Blume's video is the lack of swearing on the ride down and that little wheeze or strangled goat sound at the end.

Pretty handy actually. A mite heavy tho.
I almost ended up on the national news using one of those ladders.... folded it out fully and started to set it up and the top part was not fully latched and it flipped back and hit me on the back of my head. .... I went down on my knees and almost went out.... two other guys on the roof where I was were about 30 yards away looking at another chimney and heard the hit.....took me a couple minutes get my senses back.... the chimney I was setting the ladder up against runs down to the fireplace in the Oval Office.

Ladders have nearly been the end of me more than once. At ma bell guys would rather carry a ladder than use their hooks. You know what a 36ft wooden ladder weighs. Standing for hours on climbers is why now I have bad knees and poor circulation. If you must use a ladder employ the fireman method for angle and never get the center of your masa past either side rail
